We are a BIPOC-led coalition that builds power in Seattle to invest in pro-community, pro-people initiatives & divest from policing & the criminal legal system.

What does putting 1/4 of our city's general fund towards SPD get us? Lots of cops jailing poor people so @MayorofSeattle can pretend to sports tourists this week that poor people don't exist.

SPD constantly complains about short staffing, and yet today they tapped two SVU detectives to sweep one guy in SODO.

This will only become MORE true in Seattle as our revenues dwindle in coming years. If you don't think there's a battle coming over whether to spend Jumpstart $ on police funding, you haven't been paying attention.

Seems like a good day to run this gem by @KeeangaYamahtta back. #SCOTUS is illegitimate but powerful. How do we create a country and political system where 9 people don't overdetermine the fate of millions? https://t.co/MULp4FGe5u

For most of its history, the Supreme Court, the branch of government least accountable to the public, has tended toward a fundamental conservatism, siding with tradition over more expansive visions...

A democratic government where the only way anything gets done is if the president issues new/reinterprets old executive orders and then hopes the unelected Supreme Court lets them stand is not a democratic government.

i truly hope that these blows to the fragile diversity, access, inclusion frame encourage students, staff & faculty to organize for more transformational education, like open enrollment, free tuition, dropping standardized tests, community control mechanisms over private boards

Cop City will never be built. Let's celebrate the interim wins - Atlanta Solidarity Fund is back up accepting donations! Throw some cash to these folks in honor of #StopCopCity and our fights against cops, courts, and cages everywhere.
ANNOUNCEMENT: We have resumed our activities and are continuing to accept donations. We are stating publicly that we are here and ready with the bail, jail support, and legal support that Atlanta movements have come to depend on us to provide. https://t.co/hqE7O1vYkg

Our queer and trans communities deserve -more- than hate crimes laws, which give $$$ and power to cops, courts, and prosecutors and have never kept us safe. Remember this next time a city leader proposes hate crimes legislation to address our safety.

Remember this? The city budget never gets balanced on the backs of SPD. It happens on the backs of human services workers, all while SPD blows through their overtime budget every year. https://t.co/747SdSC2Sv

The mayor's proposed budget would roll back a 2019 law that ties social service worker wages to inflation, which has caused distress in that sector.

This is a slap in the face to the frontline workers assisting people in crisis (without guns in tow) who had to hustle to even get pay rises in line with inflation this year, after @MayorofSeattle proposed a budget that effectively gave them a pay cut.
Nearly 50 patrol officers received CEO-level compensation last year. Seven made more than Chief Diaz. Ron Willis again topped the heap, with $362k ($227k overtime). He was previously suspended for violating overtime rules. https://t.co/pFgHyl2glT

Make no mistake: Tim Burgess is a-okay with criminalizing poor people directly to an early grave. @MayorofSeattle: will you let a person who shows such utter disdain for poor, disabled people dictate your public safety agenda? People of Seattle: All eyes on the Mayor's office

The context for this quote: Burgess complaining in an e-mail to the jail director that the jail refused to accept for booking a person in mental health crisis (two days after guards at the jail had killed Michael Rowland w/in 20 minutes of his booking). https://t.co/zSgKeQMP9k

A homeless man's death in jail custody has raised serious questions about the city of Seattle's handling of behavioral health crises and the risk of prone restraint.

This is the same Tim Burgess who - two days after King County Jail employees killed Michael Rowland (a Black unhoused man experiencing a mental health crisis) - stated, "I'm fearful that I will hear next that an arrestee has a hangnail and is declined.” 🧵

Don't forget to subscribe to @DivestSPD's substack! Read for yourself what's got Brandi Kruse all riled up!
Brandi Kruse is ranting about us on her podcast right now. She calls DivestSPD one of the most influential voices "in the progressive sphere in Seattle when it comes to the anti-police sentiment." They're mad because we're good at what we do.

Must-read thread as Seattle mulls over criminalizing drug possession and public drug use. #NoNewWarOnDrugs
THREAD. As we hit an unprecedented 100,000 drug overdose deaths, I answer the following question in this thread on the "War on Drugs": are punishment bureaucrats incompetent at achieving their goals, or are they pursuing goals that are different from what they tell us publicly?

*Five hundred* people drowned trying to reach Europe last week and it was covered but my god contrasting it to the coverage of this Titanic submarine is just appalling to see, so much more focus, experts on, analysis and interest from the public. Certain lives are so cheap to us

The right question to ask is: How can we take advantage of the opportunity cop attrition represents and embrace a just transition away from policing and towards -real- safety for Seattle.
