Science is self-correcting... after you beat it with a stick, electrocute it, draw and quarter it, and then burn it at the stake. @Thatsregrettab1
New post, link in reply. "In this essay, I highlight how three of the reviews (from Nature, in 2019, which rejected it) of our proposal to replicate a famous study all argued that we should not do so, a profoundly antiscientific attitude towards … science."

If, like me, you want to defend the basic institutions and ideals of liberal democracy, you’ve got to get out of the habit of explaining away all opposition to them as the result of “propaganda”, “social media”, or “misinformation”. The objective failures, biases, and hypocrisy

This post contains a pinned answer to all of the inane & repetitive pro-tariff talking points on this site, so that I don't have to waste any more time responding to them. You will find the answers below, and if you continue pestering me anyway with the same inane talking points,

A common type of ant in Europe breaks a fundamental rule in biology: its queens can produce male offspring that are a whole different species https://t.co/2vgdjcuFPH

Nature - Ant queens of one species clone ants of another to create hybrid workers that do their bidding.

Does Sex is a Spectrum offer a bold new paradigm for understanding the biology of sex?

Some thoughts from @TheFIREorg's @glukianoff on the recent New York Times piece featuring the organization—and an extended response to the claims of one Jason Stanley: https://t.co/Xey8AyT0jF

And a response to Jason Stanley’s claim that the crisis on campus for the last 10 years has been a “moral panic”

Ian Hacking’s concept of “unhappy people” is useful here. You can acknowledge the hurt and discontent of the unhappy while still being able to critique how that unhappiness is channelled into self-defeating identities and narrow political projects.
A false dichotomy. Misrule can easily breed forms of discontent that are obscurantist and self-defeating. Particularly when worked on by an entrepreneurial element. But ‘beliefs’ are not the core issue. 1/

I do wish our intelligentsia weren’t currently radicalising themselves in a 2018 simulator on another platform, while on this one the world’s richest man radicalises himself based on whatever content is currently going viral, but this appears to be the world we live in.

Eindelijk !
For a long time renewable energy uptake in Africa was lacklustre at best. But that is changing: Solar panel imports to Africa have surged over the past year—a shift poised to touch nearly every country on the continent as new @ember_energy analysis shows.

Many people thought we'd make more advances in the social sciences than we've managed to do. Physicist Dennis Gabor in 1967: "If it were up to me, I wouldn't let a single first-class talent go into physics or chemistry. I'd put them into psychology."

This year I finally got the chance to get rid of all the traditional stuff from my epistemology course and just do political epistemology. Excited to teach this. Suggestions on things to include or replace welcome.

The revolution is here
I’m excited to share the first part of an absolutely stunning analysis from the GPT-5 thinking model! I uploaded a huge spreadsheet, nearly 1,300 metabolites (lipids, carbohydrates, microbiome-derived compounds, and much more) measured in 150 ME/CFS patients and 100 healthy

Why do people think they can reliably detect AI-generated essays when empirical studies consistently show the opposite?
