Data from ~38,000 British soldiers from 1755-1758 yields an average age of ~28. A just little younger than Christopher Duffy's "well-set up man in his early thirties." Compare that to: US soldier in WW2 was 26. Vietnam it was 19-23. Today in the US it is ~27.
"In peace, sons bury their fathers, in war, fathers bury their sons." I can almost hear the Rome: Total War loading music. How old was the average 18th cent. soldier? TL;DR, older than you might think, probably around 30. Ages ranged from 16-55+. 1/17

This is a fitting culmination to an amazing story - back in 2020, I wrote in the @CatholicHerald about archaeologists' firm identification of the relics of St Eanswythe in Folkestone
Yesterday saw a very rare event: the relics of Eanswythe of Folkestone, one of the earliest Anglo-Saxon saints, were translated into a new shrine. Her remains were hidden at the Reformation, rediscovered, and recently confirmed to date to the 7th century. https://t.co/WPZq6gHeYv

Good thread and a reminder of how pre-twentieth century armies lost men whilst in camp.
Ever wondered how Napoleon’s army evolved in the Camp of Boulogne (1803-5), before it began its conquest of Europe? Here are some stats I compiled from one regiment – the 33e Ligne – that show how it changed between the declaration of war (May 1803) & Austerlitz (Dec 1805). 1/
