4/ The digital fails exactly where human consciousness begins. Whilst we achieve subjectivity through alienating mirror recognition, machine vision can't even perceive mirrors at all. We increasingly depend on seeing technologies incapable of basic reflection.

3/ But computer vision reveals something more profound. It maps reality with extraordinary precision, every leaf & stem - until it encounters a mirror. Then algorithms fail spectacularly, creating impossible geometries and spatial voids.

2/ It's almost counter to Jacques Lacan's 'Mirror Stage'. The idea that we achieving selfhood by recognizing ourselves as "other" in the mirror. Self-reflection is both ego-defining and alienating. We find ourselves by seeing ourselves as separate, outside.

1/ Ever since @halecar2 pointed out the parallels between Hito Steyerl's "bubble vision" and my mirror-scanning work, I've been mulling it over. Steyerl shows how VR makes us "central but absent". We become the locus of digital worlds while simultaneously missing from them.

I'd thoroughly recommend reading this article - Kevin thoughtfully and fairly engages with the core tenets of the show, with a generous but critical eye on curatorial intent, presentation and execution.

I wrote a review of "Infinite Images: Art in the Age of Algorithms" at @ToledoMuseum, curated by @juliaxgulia. Very pleased that @lerandomart published it. Here are a few thoughts, in thread form.

Took me a moment to get around to reading it, but a really great interview between @AmeesiaMarold @adamberninger and a handful of great artists showing at Heft. Particularly enjoyed the positioning of how a bricks & mortar gallery functions in a digital space.

Computer-vision can recognize faces, read emotions, track movement. But show it a mirror and it goes blind. Van Eyck revealed something in 1434 that our algorithms still don't understand.
