Campaigners called for an independent review of maternity services in Caithness and the Scottish Parliament voted for it. But, it seems, that is not happening (1/5).

For years, Liberal Democrats have fought to get us back into Erasmus. The SNP promised a replacement for Erasmus but never delivered. From young people to businesses, there are so many people in Scotland who have been messed around by the Conservatives’ harmful Brexit deal.

Questioning the Prime Minister at the Liaison Committee yesterday on the impact of inheritance tax changes on farmers. The personal, mental and financial impact on farmers over the age of 75 is particularly acute now, and yet there is little sign government is listening.

Last week I was fortunate to be able to meet and speak with my Ukrainian parliamentary counterpart Oleksandr Gaydu, chair of the Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy of Ukraine, to talk about our shared priorities in resisting Russian aggression and defending food security.

Had it not been for the unbelievably selfless actions of Ahmed Al-Ahmed, many more members of Sydney's Jewish community might have perished. His heroism is a moving reminder of the common humanity that is shared by so many across all religions of our world.

These plans failed to recognise the needs of rural communities. It is therefore welcome news that they have been consigned to the dustbin. If Ministers are serious about improving road safety, they must double down on fixing our roads and deliver on their promise to dual the A9.

I was out campaigning in the Borders when I heard of our fantastic victory in Fort William and Ardnamurchan this morning. Congratulations to our newest councillor, Matthew Prosser! Right across Scotland, from the Borders to the Highlands Liberal Democrats are winning again.

The new electric car charge will hit rural areas like the Highlands harder than anywhere else due to the lack of public transport options and the large distances that journeys can involve. This must not be another city-centric policy that hits those in rural areas with the bill.

Congrats to Matthew and his team! Across the Highlands, more and more people are turning to the @scotlibdems. Next May, no matter where you live in the Highlands, if you want change with fairness at its heart then you can get that with us. Only the Lib Dems can beat the SNP.
The by-election to elect a councillor to represent Ward 21 Fort William and Ardnamurchan on The Highland Council has been won by Matthew Prosser, Scottish Liberal Democrats Read more here - https://t.co/wPKWOoTRc1

Holyrood has voted for an independent review of maternity services in Caithness, that is what we should now expect. Caithness deserves better. To have any chance of rebuilding trust, the review must have an independent chair and must meaningfully engage the community (4/5).

For the women who have bravely spoken up about their experiences of travelling to Inverness to give birth, the SNP’s backtracking will be a real blow. Let’s be clear; this is a question of respecting the will of Parliament and keeping to what you say you will do (3/5).

NHS Highland’s Chief Executive, Fiona Davies, explained to me in a letter that services in Caithness will instead be folded into the Maternity and Neonatal Taskforce, chaired by an SNP Government Minister (2/5).

People are crying out for real change and a solution to the cost-of-living crisis. A customs union with the EU is the single biggest step the government could take to grow our economy, put money back into people's pockets and generate billions for our public services.

Rural communities are yet again bearing the brunt of the SNP’s failures. From improving safety on public transport to introducing a ferries bill that guarantees a more reliable network, we have a realistic plan to get Scotland moving again so no one, nowhere is left behind.

One station went a whole year without deploying a fire engine.

There must also be a recognition that this one-sized-fits-all model simply will not work for the rural Highlands. Ministers should review the current rules to ensure they are working in the interests of community safety, not against them (4/5)/

It is deeply concerning that stations have been unable to respond to callouts. People in rural communities deserve to know that when an incident happens, someone will be on their way to help (3/5).

Lochinver Community Fire Station, recorded a 0% availability rate for all of 2024 - meaning it did not deploy an appliance at any point that year. Other Sutherland stations - including Tongue, Bettyhill, Kinlochbervie and Durness - also recorded extensive downtime (2/5).
