I had an especially off day yesterday. I was kinda grumpy the whole day, just felt off, and I had a really hard time doing any work. Ended the day feeling pretty burnt out. In other news, found out this morning that Abby accidentally put decaf in our grinder yesterday.

“So I’d think more agency-driven stuff would happen in a community that formed within Instagram or something similar”.

If you were in my session, I was going to say: “but people like the CEO and management have power to dictate what happens more so than in something like an Instagram community. Thinks like job segregation are often more enforced (or at least highly pressured) than selected.

Did you want to go to a paper in the “Style and Stylistic Variation” panel tomorrow, but there were too many good papers opposite ours? Good news! The panel’s been moved to 9:35 🤠 (Texas time). Adjust accordingly!

In case of any technical issue, a link to my talk tomorrow ("Multiple Social Routes") is here: https://t.co/FNM734rWI7 I talk about style, I talk about structure, I talk about Southern vowels (with lots of sound clips!). Excited to hear comments and questions tomorrow!

Okay y'all, student mixer, THURSDAY at 4pm EST in the lounge space in gathertown (link available in the poster session links). #NWAV49 Esp if you've brought a class, this is a great way for students to branch out into more connections!
Love to see the huge number of student registrations! #NWAV49

Well, that or the sinus headaches. Or the only being able to do anything remotely cognitively strenuous for like four hours a day. Those are also bad.

Honestly the worst thing (re:getting covid) is that the first feeling you have is “what did I do wrong”. Like I’m a sociologist who constantly tells students to not individualize structural problems, but it’s such a strong internalized ideology that it’s my first reflex

Have a breakthrough case of COVID, which I would rate as “not great”

I’ll also note that Stefon did the lion’s share of the work on this. Much thanks to him!

We find that using third-order polynomials provides a great deal more information about the shape of coarticulation, and coarticulatory effects provide more information than you might expect about upcoming vowels. A free link to the paper is here: https://t.co/Wsko1jlJ5f

Happy to announce that a paper with Stefon Flego has just come out in Journal of Phonetics! In the paper, we use whole-formant trajectories and multinomial logistic regression to look at the shape of long-distance anticipatory coarticulation over time. 1/

He had a whole playlist of this. He was like “have you heard Everclear? Marcy Playground? Creed????” I just cannot get over how stoked this man was, like he’d literally just found buried treasure or something

We visited one of Abby’s uncles this weekend, and while we’re by the pool he gets really excited and wants to play us a new song he just heard. He comes out with his phone and immediately starts playing Brain Stew by Green Day. He just discovered 90s rock, and he is So. Happy.
