When we asked seven different AI models to identify the location, date and source of photos taken by photojournalists, they collectively only answered 14 out of 280 queries completely correctly. @Aisvarya17 @klaudiajaz @CJR @columbiajourn https://t.co/kwj9LuRFyp

SCOOP: OpenSecrets, the nonpartisan money-in-politics research nonprofit, laid off 10 employees yesterday due to financial difficulties. Much of the research team were among the casualties, which constituted around a third of the group’s total headcount. https://t.co/agT13qJyeD

This comes as initiatives are looking to revive struggling local newsrooms. “What could that $6 million have done if it was dedicated to local quality journalism?” wondered Anna Brugmann of Rebuild Local News. You can read the story here on CJR!

The $6 million–plus the progressive ‘newsroom’ spent on Meta lagged only the official Trump and Harris campaigns.

Some of the ads (like the ones shown here) were explicitly political ads aiming to mobilize votes for Democratic candidates.

The organization operates 11 "newsrooms", most in key political battleground states. It spent over $6 million on Meta Ads in October. Over $4 million of that was spent in the final days before Meta's election ads restriction period.

Students in the Data Journalism MS program @columbiajourn worked with @TowCenter to track a big October digital ad spend by Courier Newsroom, an organization that blurs the line between political campaigning and local journalism. https://t.co/mUsMohZoN2

Courier Newsroom spent big on a Meta ad blitz in October. Combined, the progressive “newsroom”’s over $6 million ad spend on Meta was second only to the Trump and Harris official campaigns. From @TowCenter

My @columbiajourn students are out reporting non-stop: working sources they've built over months, navigating the campus unlike any outsider, and adding much-needed context, humanity and depth to coverage. If you're an editor looking to commission them, get in touch.

Hi, newsrooms: If you are relying on Columbia-affiliated journalists, namely student professionals in various programs at @columbiajourn, for exclusive, inside-campus coverage of protests and events, it is common (industry) courtesy and standard to compensate them for their work.

There's a lot of speculation about the uses of AI in elections, but I'm always keeping an eye out for actual documented uses. So excited to follow this project. I know I'll be checking this feed regularly throughout the year.
