Grandma told me stories about trying to survive the artificial famine staged by guess who. She said catching sparrows for a soup was their only chance, they would spend days trying to catch one, but there was hardly enough meet from one little bird to feed a family. We remember.
Today, on Nov. 26, Ukraine commemorates the victims of Holodomor, the artificial famine that killed millions of Ukrainians in 1932-1933. At 4 p.m. today, we light candles to honor their memory.

Just realized that the only (kinda) PTSD I have is from leaving Kyiv back in March. And it’s triggered by railway stations, even though I left by car back then. Every time a panicky voice in my head goes: “Don’t go! You might never come back!”
