Six years ago today Microsoft announced Windows 10, Lumia 950/XL, Band 2, Surface Pro 4, and the star of the show, Surface Book.
Definitely one of the best Microsoft reveals. I still miss that Band 2.
What was your favorite?
FUD or legit concerns about Sony's PlayStation 5 having issues?
Anyone following this stuff, talking to game devs and people in-the-know have been hearing similar rumblings for months now. This just summarize it well.
Sony may have overshot (and underestimated) Microsoft.
@w_terrence
So, they found another 6-foot-8 man of similar age, who weighs ~270 pounds and looks remarkably like him, then convinced that guy to give up his life for a congressman, and there were no witnesses of this because ... Twitter.
Genius-level theorizing.
This dBrand pastel blue is looking 🔥
I didn’t think I’d like the camera skin but with the black the contrast is nice.
Also have the new black bumper on.
Yay, it's FINALLY here!
The Dell XPS 13 Plus (Platinum) with 3456x2160 OLED touch display, i7-1280P, 16GB LPDDR5, and 512GB PCIe Gen 4 🙌
So far, it's as amazing as it looks. The KB feels excellent.
The hype is real.
FYI: This is NOT just a refresh of existing products.
Expect something new and a "one more thing..." moment besides that.
This will be the biggest Surface event since 2015. Mark my words.

Ah, the good ol' days.
Literally.
Microsoft and Nokia had about 720 good days of potential before falling apart (especially when Lumia 950 and Windows 10 Mobile happened).
The Lumia 920, 925, 1020, and 1520-era (and 520 for sales) were at their peak. Hell, I even loved/used…
In 2011,
@Microsoft
CEO
@Steven_Ballmer
&
@Nokia
CEO Stephen Elop announced a partnership that would see Nokia - the largest phone manufacturer at the time - adopt the Windows Phone OS on its devices. The venture was unsuccessful: Nokia fell from
#1
to
#10
in phone sales by 2013.
I can't say I use the Your Phone/Link to Windows Android app feature often, but w Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 and Win 11, the combo is incredibly fast, easy to use.
They've done a good job pushing this as far as it can go.
And you can even use it with the Flip folded/closed.
Not something many of us have seen in action (yet), but Windows 11 finally gives an estimate on how long that next pending update is going to take to install.
Small things like this are really important to the UX.
"And you see, this is why Windows Phone was the best mobile OS ever and Nokia Lumias were the best smartphones. But the world wasn't ready for how awesome they were and iSheep thought Apple invented smartphones, while Google sells your Droid data. They all had bad cameras."
Apple could have done a “reverse” notch that does double duty as a leverage point to open the laptop lid without touching the display.
Lenovo did this in 2019, and it has Face ID (aka Windows Hello).
But sure, Apple are geniuses.
OMG, I cannot believe that people are complaining about the camera notch on the new MacBook Pros. You do understand that you’re GAINING screen area, right? Apple extended the image up into what used to be blackness. (And put the menu bar there. The notch doesn’t block anything.)
Another "classic" Win32 app, Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, drops into the new Microsoft Store for Windows 11.
It's just one of many full apps being put onto the store thanks to Microsoft's new relaxed policies.
And I'm back 🤦♂️
As to what happened to my account between now and Oct 28th 🤷♂️
Also, Twitter unfollowed all 600+ people I was following, so, um, give me a few days (weeks?) to re-follow you.
Colleagues, if you see this, you can respond to make it easier.

The Microsoft Edge Drop feature, which lets you easily send files, notes, links, and photos between your various Edge devices (mobile, PC, etc.), is outstanding.
How can you minimise all open apps except the one you're working on?
Select and hold the window you want to stay open, then give your mouse (or finger) a little back-and-forth shake.

Hearing Apple users talking about the Surface Duo's high price, missing features that are inexcusable for a "flagship phone", complaining about its size, with a dash of "too much hype".
That lack of self-awareness ...
I used Surface Duo 2 today at a media event to take notes using OneNote. It was such a modern experience especially since many of my colleagues were using notepads.
Forgot my Slim Pen, but had a spare OG pen on my bag, thankfully.
Ngl, this was kind of game changing for me.
Galaxy Book S with Qualcomm 8cx looking good.
In theory, performance is near Core i5, but with "23 hours of battery" and, of course, LTE. instant-on, Samsung build quality and display...this should be a fun laptop.
Huge news: Intel is working on new software dubbed 'Intel Unison' that lets you use Android and iOS in Windows for calls, SMS, photos, files, and more.
It launches this holiday season. I did some interviews with Intel about it, including long-term plans:
With Windows phone hitting official end of life with the last update to Windows 10 Mobile, we salute all the devs and engineers both at Microsoft and beyond who poured their hearts into this unique ecosystem.
🥂 Thanks for all the good times, and the good tiles!
Anytime I hear Musk complaining about Microsoft/ChatGPT/Bing, I'm reminded of the Semafor story of how he wanted to run OpenAI, and the board told him 'no,' so he left with his money ... which then forced OpenAI to find money elsewhere. Enter Microsoft.
We had to say goodbye to this girl today 😭 I'm sure many of you have heard Zoe meow on the podcast or saw her in photos on the site. I had 19 yrs w/her, which makes it that much harder.
RIP, Zoe. You were the sweetest office mate and friend.

Eight years ago today Microsoft launched Surface.
This was from launch night in NYC and yeah, that's
@panos_panay
signing devices and boxes for fans.
Surface has had a massive impact on PCs going forward and changed the conversation.
My favorite part about Surface Laptop SE and Windows 11 SE is all the guys in their 30s and 40s "weighing in" on hardware and software built for 8-year-olds.
Yes, please, give us your spicy takes on a child's laptop guy wrestling with hair loss and dropping T levels.
An incredibly good point most game journalists have missed about the Microsoft-ZeniMax acquisition: While the game library is significant, the hidden gem may have been 'Orion'.
Here is why Orion could supercharge Microsoft's xCloud game streaming 👇
Be everywhere, no walls.
Intel, Qualcomm, AMD, phone, tablets, holographic, VR, laptops, 2in1s, desktop, Android, Linux WSL, Windows, iOS, iPad OS, gaming, Xbox, cloud, AI.
It’s about services, software, dev, and leading in hardware.
Microsoft is platform agnostic.
When I asked Satya Nadella whether Microsoft ever thought about reviving a true Windows mobile OS, he told me: "The operating system is no longer the most important layer for us...What is most important for us is the app model and the experience."
If you don't like a company's ToS, then don't use the service.
There is no "free speech" on private platforms. If you don't like it, start up your own company. Structure it how you want like the commie hippie you are.
This was a great campaign. No one did social/media as well as Nokia back then.
It's funny how in 2020 we still can't have this much of an integrated OS/app experience.
Also funny how Windows 10 Mobile sucked the fun out of Windows Phone.
Here's the first Nokia Lumia 800 Ad - kicking off their "Amazing Everyday" campaign
I totally loved the vibe and messaging of this campaign - by far my favourite of any smartphone brand ever
On this day in 2014, HTC was briefing media on the HTC One (M8) for Windows (2 of my personal shots during that briefing are below).
After the Nokia/MS 'McLaren' was canceled this was Plan B for a Windows Phone flagship. Amazing device, but was limited to Verizon in the US.
Hard to believe we had this in 2016.
I'm still both surprised and not surprised it never took off (mostly performance and desktop vs. mobile app issues; still an issue today), but the concept so leaned into a possible future. Kudos to HP to giving its all.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 are now being used on 1.4 billion monthly active devices, according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
That's up from 1.3 billion back in April.
Today's project.

Finally, a review that insists I sit on my butt for hours. Don't worry, I got this. Been training my whole life.

Microsoft's updated emoji (coming later this year to Windows, Teams, Outlook, etc.) really are a lot of fun.
Gone are the flat elements and, instead, are more 3D.
And yes, there's Clippy.
Microsoft Store is getting better and better. Teams is now listed (finally).
However, I won't be satisfied and won't rest until 3D Pinball Space Cadet (1995) is available. Let's make it happen

7 years ago, today I was with
@samsabri
in Abu Dhabi for Nokia World. They announced the Lumia 1520 and a whole lot of stuff.
We spent the day riding quads, surfing and bashing dunes, and riding camels. What an amazing adventure.
Here we go!
Discord, Epic Games Store (!), Opera, Wikipedia and more are coming to the Microsoft Store for Windows 11.
Android apps coming "soon" to Insiders.
Full details:
Apple supposedly not showing 69° in its weather app is so apropos. It's the Disney of tech. It pretends sex just doesn't exist.
Meanwhile, Microsoft Weather is getting rowdy over here.
Nice.
It's weird doing the 10 year thing, but here we go.
In 2010 I was working at Cornell doing research/treating patients for sleep disorders. A bit later
@kevinmichaluk
asked me to work full-time at Windows Central. It took a LOT of convincing too!
Best decision ever🙏
Skype is *definitely* not going away. Microsoft wants you to know it has huge plans for it including a complete redesign, Fluent icons, improved performance and more
Very interesting stuff here. Looks great, too.
