My research group have discovered that I am afraid of invertebrates, and have responded appropriately. I am proud of them

Or, as the ultimate tool of procrastination, check out an absurd system I use to write LaTeX documents using. vim. Nothing like using a text editor that is older than my students😂.🧵6/7.

Or perhaps you're more interested in (what I consider to be) reasonable defaults for writing collaborative papers in LaTeX?.🧵5/7.

There are also guides for some aspects of computational research, with titles like."Git for scientists who want to learn git. later" .🧵4/7.

Among the things you will find: javascript simulators I use while teaching critical phenomena. Do you (dis)like the color scheme I've used? Make use of the gratuitous controls to customize the colors, and post your most garish Ising spin images!.🧵3/7

Perhaps you, too, are finding today stressful? To help take my mind off of the events of the day I've been taking some parts of my research group's lab manual, and some teaching resources, and adding them to my webpage. A brief thread to distract us all with science!.🧵1/7

Of course, I'm excited about the science problems we'll tackle with this, but also. did I mention that this is for arbitrary surfaces? Jamming problems on the surface of an elephant, anyone?

Toler Webb, a graduate student I have the pleasure of working with, has been doing heroic work implementing simulations of particles on curved manifolds! We'll be open-sourcing the code and writing up the methods paper describing it ASAP, so for now just a few fun snippets.🧵1/3

Making this functional was no mean feat, but we've reached deep into our bag of numerical tricks to build an implementation fast enough to be useful. 1000s of particles? No problem at all: it took longer to make this gif than to run the simulation 😂.3/3

This is easy (or "easy") to do if the interactions only care about Euclidean distances, but we've extended our simulation framework to interactions that care about *geodesic* distances!.2/3.
