We tested this theory on fiddler crabs and found that it missed an important 🧩. Leadership was not directly related to sync as predicted. Instead, sync signals are an effect of the competition to give faster signals (another attractive trait) (2/3).

In some animals, males synchronize their courtship signals. Sync can be unintentional, a by-product of the competition between males to give leading signals to attract female attention. Sync is then considered an evo stable strategy maintained through sexual selection (1/3)
