Fun fact : DN stands for Detroit News and we’ve got some really talented and world champions in the area :) iceboating is so cold but so much fun
Ice boaters line up after doing practice runs on Pontiac Lake at the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area in Waterford on January 2, 2026. With good winds and nice ice with little snow cover they can reach speeds of over 50 mph. 📸 by @ericseals of @freep

“Do you have any idea how long it takes someone to save $5,000?” is something that feels like it should have aged poorly. Good heavens.
This single scene from It's a Wonderful Life is so scary how much of a parallel it is to this. This entire film was a fucking warning, but boomers instead treated Mr. Potter like an idol.

As a Detroiter and midwesterner, this isn’t why I followed this account, but all the Michigan posts lately is something I’m celebrating and absolutely not complaining about.
Not that anyone’s complained but I know the account has been very Detroit focused lately. I’m planning to do Indianapolis soon, then I’ll be back in Chicago in February, then leaving the Midwest for once to photograph architecture in Arizona.

I hear Shanahan is a very common Russian surname. Joking aside, I was very touched. It’s been a few days and I’m still caught off guard and still processing a very thoughtful gift.

My girlfriend gave me an autographed hockey puck from my favorite Red Wings player. Her mom asked me if he was in the Russian Five. Totally! We all know the notorious five: Federov, Konstantinov, Kozlov, Larionov and Brendan. I enthusiastically told her “same era!”

This is what the drunk raccoon was doing before he passed out in the bathroom at the ABC liquor store. I painted it.

If I ever got a “good spuds” from any of my family members, it would override and heal so much familial trauma.

Living and working in Detroit, I am in constant awe. It never gets old. There are towering buildings older than at least four states with intricate and gorgeous brickwork done by hand next door to glass towers and burned out husks. It’s absurd and gorgeous and I love it.
People who are too jaded to look out the airplane window are almost as depressing as the city dwellers who never stare up at the architecture around them (because only gauche tourists do that). Life is too short to be bored, retvrn to awe and wonder

I will only live in the cookie cutter suburbs if a mad scientist on a mountain lives at the end of the cul du sac.

When the movie ended, my dad turned his phone on and was like “that was the fastest three hours of my life! That was so much fun!” This movie is so good. Every variable is nailed down so well but so organically. Everyone deserves Oscars here.

We basically went into it dry, I saw my Twitter feed raving about it and we both only vaguely remember a trailer before Bikeriders and thinking it looked fun. Mom was like “maybe don’t take dad to it,” the day before we saw it. I mostly didn’t want twitter to ruin anything.

Okay, since everyone is talking about One Battle After Another again, I just want to say that I saw it opening weekend with my conservative father who doesn’t watch movies more than once, and he loved it and told my mom he would eagerly watch it again if she was interested.

Look, my boomer parents who grew up in Detroit and were afraid of it will take any excuse to go to Detroit right now. You are just leaving money on the table, Detroit. Stop letting the Brighton MJR take all our money. You can do this.

If there was a movie theater in Detroit, I wouldn't have to drive to livingston county to see a movie with my dad or sister. Yeah, we could split the difference, see something in Livonia or something, but how could I convince family members to go to Livonia when I don't want to
