Unfortunately a third of my team was let go today, including myself. I feel absolutely terrible for the others. One just signed a lease, another just got married, another just moved here for the job and was here barely a month, and so on. I wish I could fix this for them.
I’m super excited to announce that I’m joining
@Blizzard_Ent
as Senior Director/Editor-in-Chief of Online Products (basically: I’ll be creating a new in-house editorial team). Today is day one!
Me, 15 years ago: pissed at everyone who scanned EGMs for the internet, hurting our sales.
Me, today, trying to reference an old issue: I wish more people scanned EGMs back in the day.
It was a great run at Blizzard. I made so many lifelong friends and have definitely gained tons of XP. When I first got the opportunity, one of the biggest factors was to work at one of top (and one of my fave) video game publishers in the world. How many people get to do that?
We needed an easy way to see how we’ve all aged, so I present to you our “annual 1UP Network/Ziff Davis/EGM reunion” photo.
Seeing these fools is definitely the highlight of
#GDC
for me! We missed a few folks who left earlier or who couldn’t make it at all. 😢 Next year!
Catching up with my ol’ EGM buddies living in Tokyo:
@markmacd
,
@johntv
, and Michael Donahoe…at a secret Nintendo cafe/bar, no less. Love these guys!
EGM reunion last night! (2000s/San Francisco/print era) It was great catching up with these wonderful people. They're all doing amazing things now. (And some of them really made me really appreciate not having any kids right now.) :)
I've literally reviewed hundreds and hundreds of video games (at one point, we counted close to 700 in the mid-2000s). I don't remember playing them all. But I'll never forget playing this one.
EGM fans: You're going to love this episode. We go deep, deep behind-the-scenes on what went on at the magazine. The antics, the nonsense, why we did the things we did, some dirty laundry.... lots of juicy details, some of which we might later regret discussing out loud.
Thank you all for the outpouring of love ♥️. Especially from these guys! (It seems a few people think I ran Blizzard, so I'm flattered. Also, why Vietnam? At least pick the big Asian country for better odds.)
EGM fans: You’ll appreciate this article. I talk a lot about the magazine business, competitors, how I got started, why I loved the mag before I even got there…
Thx for the interview,
@american80s
!
My new desk/office at Blizzard! So much space...I think I’m going to host some touch football games here.
(Actually, the rest of my team will be moving in next week.)
Blizzard’s been awesome in taking care of all of us during

. Support staff, PTO, hotel reimbursement, canceling or rescheduling of meetings...whatever you need if you’ve had to evacuate your home.
35 years ago today (10/23). I dreamt about this game constantly when I was a kid. The art direction and world design were unmatched. Many say SMW is the better game, and gameplay-wise it may well be, but for art and imagination, SMB3 is hard to beat
At EGM, I made and enforced this rule: reviewers were not to discuss thoughts or scores with each other before committing to their own scores. First time they learned of their fellow reviewers’ opinions on a game they reviewed together was when they were already on paper proof.
From the beginning I had a rule to never read another game review before writing my own:
1) Ensured my confidence wasn't shaken if they liked it way more/less than me.
2) Ensured my opinion wasn't subtly swayed.
3) Ensured no specific turns of phrase seeped into my subconscious.
We rented a theater tonight for a private watch party for Shang-Chi. Can't wait! I've successfully avoided spoilers all weekend long.
28 vaccinated friends...comes out to $7.30 a person. That's cheap. Probably like silent-film era cheap.
We took a risk with this cover. No central image, no identifiable game character or franchise. But it worked out and sold really well for us on newsstands.
The Dan 'Shoe' Hsu interview. I spoke to the former editor of EGM about his time in the industry, the review crew, and why Acclaim pulled their advertising over this Turok review. Read more 👉 🌴🌞

I'm looking for a content writer intern! Details: paid internship for a student; 12 weeks in 2021 (with potential to convert to full-time); plays Blizzard games; knows how to write, can easily spot the mistake in this Tweet. Apply here:
Thank you so, so much to everyone who reached out to me today. I'm overwhelmed with the thoughtful messages. I really appreciate it.
Job-wise, I'm doing well. Didn't get laid off today. But a lot of other people did, so please send them your love and support if you know them.
This issue was so much fun to work on. And I remember how amazing it was to have early access to the machine (at E3, in our offices) because we were absolutely obsessed with Soul Calibur.
Every year for the Dreamcast anniversary think back to the days of working on this issue of EGM. It was an absolute beast to produce with
@DanShoeHsu
@johntv
@markmacd
@shawnimals
@superpac
and crew, but I think it might be my favorite issue of a magazine I was ever a part of
We recently wrapped up Andor...and wowowow. It makes Mandalorian look like Baby Star Wars for Babies. The writing, the tension, the aesthetics....MORE ANDOR PLEASE.
Sure, sure...new Diablo, new Overwatch, etc...but here's the *real* big news for the day: Blizzard just released a beta of the new, redesigned ! You can check it out now by going to the desktop app: settings: beta.
More info:
People ask why so many are so eager to change their PSN IDs. Some that sounded cool when you were 13 may not sound so cool as an adult. Me? Mine was from my job at the time (“EGMShoe”).
What’s your reason?
It's official: the ability to change your PSN Online ID is coming. Here are the first details: Testing with select users starts soon, full rollout planned for early 2019
Ordered a new copy of the best issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (150, January 2002). Some amazing games are reviewed here: Halo, MGS2, GTA3. The greatest games list is top-notch.
@Seanbabydotcom
’s Worst Games list is hilarious. So many memories.

Before I begin, I am NOT a spokesperson for Activision Blizzard. These are my own thoughts about the recent news surrounding our company. And here's what I told my team (four women, two men, not including me).
I was surprised and shocked like so many others. (1/7)
It’s a four-table gaming day.
@chrispyha
and I are hosting about 16 of our vaxxed friends for 12+ hours of

over two floors. Reserving tomorrow to clean up and recharge our brains.
Pretty awesome...our employer gave all of us $200 to give to a charity of our choice. No cost to us -- we just pick out the org we want to give to from a massive list. (I donated to science education since people seem to be afraid of facts these days.)
Oh, one more: We just didn’t have a good backup plan. Didn’t feel right/fair/balanced doing more (or only) coverage for one system over the other. So we went all in on this concept and just hoped it’d work out.
In the end, some things were rushed. We didn’t see every launch-window game we wanted to. But everyone moved mountains (and giant dev kits) to make this work. I can’t tell you just how many global approvals needed to happen for this.
Still can’t believe it came together. (end)
Check out

's coffee table. It is incredible! If he had me over, I don't think I could talk about anything else except thing thing.
(This is his photo, not mine.)
Whoa,
@RonFunches
was an EGM fan! And these issues were during my run there.
(Capcom wasn't a huge fan of the zombie we had created for the cover, naturally, as it wasn't an official Resident Evil zombie.)
The official answer key from Cynthia Northup, product manager for and creator of this quiz (she’s not on social media).
Again, this isn’t any official Blizzard thing. Just for fun for our department’s holiday party.
#blizzlife
That was one of our best-selling covers. It led us to try out more covers that were just one giant headline (vs. a piece of character art), as you can see in the original pix in the thread below. I'm always surprised how many people bring up this issue.
I did my little, tiny part in helping Shenmue III get announced at E3 2015, but at the time, I wondered if this game would ever come out.
So happy to see this arrive today. 🥳
Blizzard holiday party tonight! They’ll be closing Disneyland to the public, so crowds/lines will be nothing.
I’m already plotting out all the empty calories I’ll be consuming tonight.
EGM, the original metacritic. Look at these multiple scores and aggregation. Loved how they handled game reviewing back in the day. Trusted this crew's opinions more than my teachers at the time haha!
We just saw Barbie, and it was a lot of fun! I didn’t know much going in, so almost all of it was completely unexpected.
Bonus: Now I get to enjoy thinking about all the sad, insecure men who must be losing their shit over the film’s commentary.
It's crazy to think back to playing Warcraft II over dial-up. Because I was at EGM (a console magazine) for so long, I even played War II on Saturn, StarCraft 64 on Nintendo 64, and Diablo (1!) on PlayStation (1!).
And now I work at Blizzard. That's nuts. And I'm old.
#blizzlife
Wow...all the love and long hours that went into these, working with such talented, awesome, and funny people.
There are so many behind-the-scenes stories to tell here, enough to fill a book that I’ll never get around to writing.
We really wanted to make this Xbox vs GameCube story work since the two were coming out around the same time.
And to their credit, Microsoft and Nintendo really tried to make it work for us, too.
Been checking in on my former co-workers at PlayStation after weeks of checking in on former co-workers at Activision-Blizzard. What a crappy start to 2024 so far.
By far the cruelest thing I've seen while working at Blizzard.
When a new employee joins our dept., we normally give them boxes of donuts to encourage others to stop by and say hi.
During this work-from-home time, we still get the "welcome X" emails but only *photos* of donuts.
This is so cool: Metroid speedrunner (and my Blizzard coworker)

That meant working on our schedule, with print lead times, with hardware/software that weren’t done yet.
Nintendo was always tough to work with. Took tons of comms and convincing, and even with Nintendo of America on board, doesn’t mean N of Japan was as well.
