Per sources, Texans QB Deshaun Watson met with new Texans head coach David Culley last Friday. In that meeting Watson reiterated that he wants to be traded and told Culley he has no intention of playing for the Texans again. No change from Watson's end. He remains dug in.
Before I block them, I like to check out the Twitter bios of the people who say disgusting things about my wife and kids because of a thing I said on TV about sports. Often, they say things like “Christ follower” and “Father of two beautiful girls,” and I find that interesting.
Landon Collins is 25 years old, has made three Pro Bowls and been a first-team All-Pro. The locker room loves him. The fan base loves him. For the team that drafted him to let him walk when they can hold him in place for $11.15M is just a brutally bad decision.
Bottom line: On the list of people who should be taking the fall for the current state of the Giants, Eli Manning's name is not at the top or even that close. Shameful treatment of a proven leader by failed ones.
Per a league source, the NFL is looking into potential tampering by the Eagles and the Falcons related to the free-agent signings of Saquon Barkley and Kirk Cousins.
Because this is Cam, it will necessarily gather much more attention. But the fact is, the Falcons had a player (A.J. Terrell) test positive last week, he didn't play, all other tests came back fine, they played Bears Sunday, no Falcons or Bears got sick. Same procedures in place.
So, are we really going to skip over the very serious and disturbing stuff that happened with Richard Sherman this summer and go right to “WOW! Sherman to the Bucs?!?!?!?”
De Smith: "Wearing a mask will probably be the most significant component of whether sports return in this country. That's not a political statement; that's a common sense and scientific statement."
Lamar Jackson on Antonio Brown: “There’s no quit with him. That’s the type of guy we need in our locker room. I feel like our locker room is different than other locker rooms. There’s a brotherhood going on. None of that outside noise. Strictly inside.”
Per sources, Deshaun Watson and the NFL did engage in further settlement talks in recent days, but neither side felt they got close. The best Watson’s side indicated it would accept was 6-8 games. Best league indicated it was willing to do was 12 games + heavy fine $8 mil range).
At ESPN, we have a reporter for each of the 32 NFL teams. It's an outstanding group. But I wanted to do a quick thread to highlight the work of the four excellent ESPN reporters covering the four teams left in the playoffs. Follow and read them. It'll be worth it, I promise.
I am told the Chiefs sent Kareem Hunt home from the facility today upon learning of the release of the video and pending further action. Most likely short-term resolution is that Hunt would be placed on the commissioner's exempt list pending a final decision, but we will see.
It appears the Packers converted Aaron Rodgers' $58.3M 2023 option bonus into 2024 salary, which means he's scheduled to make $1.165M this year and $107.55M next year. So he'd only count $1.165M against the Jets' cap this year, and obviously they'll restructure next year.
Giants owner John Mara just now at owners meetings, re: Odell Beckham: "I wish he would create the headlines by his play on the field as opposed to what he says and what he does off the field. I think he needs to do a little more playing and a little less talking."
I am being told there have been NFL/NFLPA discussions today about rescheduling Saturday’s Raiders-Browns game, likely to Monday or Tuesday. A decision could be announced within the next hour, before Raiders are scheduled to travel to Cleveland.
Sources with multiple teams believe the Broncos could trade a WR. Denver has had talks with teams about Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Teams say the Broncos are asking high prices, not just dumping, but it's not out of the question one gets moved.
You can rationalize it all you want. Fact is, if Lamar Jackson is available and my team’s position was, “Nah, we’re good with Desmond Ridder,” I’d be pissed.
@DanGrazianoESPN
maybe they don’t want to build a super specific RPO laden offense built around a running qb that’s been injured and wants a fully guaranteed deal at upwards of 45+ mil a year? lol. and have to give up multiple firsts and restructure your offense to primarily feature running plays
This, for example, is a far more irresponsible and inaccurate comment than what Urban Meyer said. The rate of positive tests among unvaccinated NFL personnel is 7 times higher than the rate of positive tests among vaccinated personnel.
Bill Belichick: "Your implication that the vaccination solves every problem...has not been substantiated. The number of players and coaches and staff members who have been infected with COVID after being vaccinated is a pretty high number. I wouldn't lose sight of that."
Sources close to the Deshaun Watson situation believe a resolution could come today or tomorrow. Recent talks between NFL and Watson's reps have heightened hope that they can reach a settlement without Peter C. Harvey having to rule, but it's unclear how much longer he will wait.
Per source, tests showed Bears RB David Montgomery has a knee sprain that’s expected to keep him out 4-5 weeks. Not season-ending, but Bears will be without their starting RB for a while.
Source says agent Bob LaMonte, who represents Josh McDaniels, Colts GM Chris Ballard and many other coaches/execs, is terminating his relationship with McDaniels.
Tom Brady has played in:
-18.2 percent of all of the Super Bowls ever played
-23.3 percent of the Super Bowls played since he was born
-50 percent of the Super Bowls played since he was drafted.
Per multiple sources, the Baltimore Ravens and QB Lamar Jackson have had productive conversations in recent days, and there's optimism that they are making progress toward a long-term extension.
NFL and NFLPA have agreed on testing protocols. They will start with daily testing for the first two weeks, then go to every other day if the positive test rate falls below 5 percent. If it doesn't, they'll keep testing daily.
How come no one ever says, "These $14-15 billion in annual NFL revenues are getting out of hand?" Why is it only the player salaries that people think are out of hand?
Frank Reich announces that the
#Colts
are bucking tradition and will not play most of their starters in Saturday’s third preseason game against the Bears:
Per source, the NFL and the NFLPA have agreed to a salary cap ceiling of $208.2 million for the 2022 season. If it gets there, that would be a 14 percent increase over the 2021 cap of $182.5 million. (more)
Sources: NFLPA board of player reps voted 17-14 with one abstaining to move the CBA vote to all players.
Owners agreed to eliminate the $250,000 cap on earnings for 17th game.
Eli Manning deserves better than these Giants. Jerry Reese runs the franchise into the ground and now embarrasses an all-time franchise great with "we need to evaluate." Clean house.
The Colts are changing quarterbacks again. Nick Foles will take over for Matt Ryan as the starter Monday Night against the Chargers, and the plan is for Foles to start the final three games of the season. Announcement expected Wednesday afternoon.
On Halloween 2018, Jay Gruden’s team was 5-2 and in first place in the NFC East. Less than a year later, he’s out. Alex Smith injury, Trent Williams holdout, multitude of issues made it a difficult position in which to succeed.
I’m told the Jets contingent on the way to California includes team owner Woody Johnson, GM Joe Douglas, head coach Robert Saleh, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, possibly others.
Update: Sources tell
@DanGrazianoESPN
and me that a contingent of Jets team officials are scheduled to fly out today to meet in person with Aaron Rodgers.
Source: Former 49ers safety Eric Reid has filed a collusion grievance against the NFL. Reid's attorney is Mark Geragos, who's also represented Colin Kaepernick.
Source says Myles Garrett appeal argument is precedent-based. Antonio Smith got 2 preseason gms + 1 reg season gm for swinging helmet at Incognito in '13. Ergo, even six games (remainder of this season) is too long, they argue. And of course, indefinite suspension unacceptable.
I’m told that a few Browns and Rams players already have met the testing requirements to be removed from the reserve/COViD list under the new protocols that were announced Thursday. So there’s optimism that an extra two days could have a real impact on player availability.
I know what their record is, but I have to think that Giants fans have to be happy with what they're seeing from Joe Judge so far. Has his team playing tough.
Per sources, Vikings won’t be back in their facility until all of their test results are in. League contact tracing has identified 48 close contacts with the eight people who tested positive in Tennessee. Contingency/rescheduling plans are being discussed, obviously.
To be clear: The new NFL COVID protocols make it possible for anyone who's tested positive this week to "test back in" and play this weekend (yes, even if you tested positive today and play Saturday) as long as they're vaccinated and show no symptoms.
Nope! As usual, you steal and misrepresent what I wrote for your own self-serving purpose!! I very clearly wrote that the speculation was entirely external. Not “around the Cardinals.” Have a nice weekend!!!
The Vikings have called other candidates to inform them they’re out of the running, sources say. Deal with O’Connell can’t be officially finalized until after the Super Bowl.
Reasons why this has become the expectation as day has progressed, based on conversations I've had with people familiar:
1. Free agency isn't a spectator event with large crowds.
2. Deals can be done without visits.
3. What if they push it back two weeks and things get worse?
Multiple people across the league now are anticipating that the start of the league year will not be moved and it will start on time, per sources. There still are ongoing conversations, and it still could change, but there is a different tone from teams as if it is happening now.
NFLPA won an arbitration grievance against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Said Jags tried requiring players to get all offseason medical treatment at team facility, which contravenes the CBA. “You as players may want to consider this when you have a chance to select your next club.”
More punishments for offseason workout rules violations, per source:
-Texans coach Lovie Smith fined $50,000 due to prohibited 1-on-1 OL vs DL drills.
-Commanders coach Ron Rivera fined $100,000 and WAS loses two 2023 OTA practices due to excessive contact in practice drills.
Source on Brees says the most optimistic recovery time would be 2-3 weeks. Emphasis on "optimistic." Will depend on healing time, which varies by patient, and when they're convinced he can take a hit without risk of serious re-injury. There is hope he's back in time for playoffs.
Per source, Raiders WRs coach Edgar Bennett will remain with the team in the same role under new head coach Josh McDaniels. Bennett interviewed in Buffalo for the OC job that went to Ken Dorsey. He gets an extension and stays in Las Vegas.
NFLPA held a 2-hour call today for player reps. Lots of info re: season plans. Players could face fines for conduct detrimental if they're found to have spread COVID by engaging in "reckless" behavior away from the facility, such as eating out at restaurants or riding in Ubers.
It's worth saying this before anyone starts talking about "pie" again: There is ZERO chance the Cowboys would have done a La'el Collins deal (or a Jaylon Smith deal) that would in any way hinder their ability to do an Ezekiel Elliott deal or a Dak Prescott deal.
A little pregame non-Super Bowl news: Sources tell me and
@JFowlerESPN
that Jim Leonhard is expected to join the Denver Broncos' staff to coach the secondary. Leonhard is a former NFL DB who's well regarded in coaching circles and has been talking to several NFL and college teams
Odell Beckham Jr. has had a good week of practice and I’m told that, barring an unforeseen setback between now and game time, the Browns expect him to make his season debut Sunday against the Bears.
@DanGrazianoESPN
Not sure how a guy coming back from a certain injury faster than anyone ever because he wants to play in the same season doesn’t warrant this. You just a hater looking for attention
NFLPA voting on the new CBA proposal closes at 11:59 pm ET tonight. The accounting firm that's managing the voting will have to go through a verification process and is expected to inform NFLPA leadership of the results sometime Sunday morning. Wish I could be more specific.
Giants/Kenny Golladay update from me and
@JordanRaanan
- He’s staying in the area tonight, no deal yet, no resolution expected tonight, still some things to work through. Sounds like still a decent chance they sign him but nothing done yet.
It's not out of the question that the Browns-Bills game could be moved to a different location due to impending snowstorm. NFL is monitoring the storm, in contact with both teams and local officials, and says it can make a decision as late as Friday if needed.
