When I was a senior pastor selecting laypeople to elevate to associate pastor roles, I paid attention to how they treated people. Treating ppl well is a big part of Christianity 101. As great athletes attest, mastering fundamentals is a key to success.

The Bible tells us to consider others more important than ourselves (Philippians 2:3). How often do we see ppl doing that? It's rare. Selflessness is subversively countercultural. It's revolutionary. God sees and cherishes the little selfless things we do in our little lives.

First time I returned from Iraq was just before 4th of July. Every time I heard fireworks I jumped. Then I realized that fireworks are supposed to represent the sound of bombs going off--the sounds of our revolution & freedom. I realized I was appreciating the 4th in a new way.

(Selfish) ambition is a dangerous thing. It opens the door up to every other kind of evil. Be very aware of ppl's ambition. (And imagine for a moment the cesspool of selfish ambition that exists in DC). Also be aware of ppl's selflessness--those are the ppl to promote & champion

@infantrydort More on the topic. In 2013, I was on a very small FOB in Helmand Province. I ran civilian sources out in town to gather " Atmospherics." I had sources on both sides of the conflict. I wrote probably twenty reports per week. Of these at least five would follow a very predictable.
