Sadly this platform is killing me slowly. It used to be so good. From now on I’ll be shifting over to Bluesky with the same handle: @danbrownnature.bsky.social Find me there & hopefully we can get back to sharing good wholesome natural history content. See you there 👋

One of the most stunning flies I’ve ever seen, a Tachinid but no idea which species in the rainforest, Daintree, North Queensland. Found one displaying high on a trunk but this one posed a little better. #diptera #Tachinid

Quite probably the weirdest moth I have ever seen… Melittia doddi (most likely) a bizarre Clearwing with rampant leg scales held out along the wing presumably to provide disruptive camo! Utterly amazing. Found in Cairns Botanic Garden today #Lepidoptera #MothsMatter @cairnscity

Huge flocks of Red-necked Phals off the coast of Lembata in the rich upwellings of the Indian Ocean, one even photo-bombed by a Pygmy Blue Whale! #Waders #OM1

A surprise new primate for me at Rainforest Discovery Centre, Sepilok; Hose's Langur now known as Sabah Grey Langur getting harassed by a pair of Prevost's Squirrels. The ultra humidity put pay to the OM1 but it miraculously came back to life today! Happy days #Primates

Excitement overload at Sepilok when Rachael spotted this Myrmarachne spider (Ant-mimic Spider) which was successful hunting the vegetation disguised as a Giant Forest Ant! Every day blows my mind in the rainforest #mimicry #entomology

Some nice #primate action at Bako National Park, Sarawak with shore-foraging Silvered Langurs, Long-tailed Macaques and Proboscis Monkeys all putting on a good show #OM1

Nice little addition to our seabird survey today as we cruised along the coast of Sarawak (before anyone gets over excited!); a smart and fresh juvenile Pallas’s Grasshopper Warbler.

I knew there'd be some benefiting to spending half the day scratting around in the attic... Pseudeuophrys lanigera, a cracking wee jumping spider which was only found in the UK in 1930 & rather likes roof spaces! Seemingly still pretty scare in Scotland too. Crathie, #Cairngorms

Having successfully missed every migrant and been away from home when Aberdeenshire saw more Convolvs than you can shake a stick at, it’s back to roaming the woods and staring at trees in the dark. Exaeretia ciniflonella x2 the highlight last night to sugar #TeamMoth

Great to be able to check the trap at @kewgardens today. Highlights were 3 Plumed Fan-foot, Duponchelia fovealis and what I presume is Oak Hooktip despite the toothed dark costal blaze. Despite searching tens of trees not a single Red Underwing or Clifden - weather? Year??

This explains the origins of many of the recent migrant moths and why Shetland and Orkney are turning up a few nice species/records.

The weather pattern can be seen quite nicely in the jet stream. A cut-off low pressure drops south into the Bay of Biscay and acts like an engine to draw hot air west out of Eastern Europe through Central/Northern Europe.

Despite heavy rain nearly all night the haul was 523 of 54 in the MV and 52 of 16 to Sugar (4sp not recorded at light). Probably one of my bigger September catches. Also an insane number of Violet Ground Beetles to sugar last night #TeamMoth #MothsMatter

The sugaring is picking up in Cairngorms as temp dropped to 5oC last night. First pristine Herald of the year plus Brown-spot Pinion amongst 10sp but highlights were our first False Ladybird in Deeside & Northern Rose Chafer (former a rare sp in Scotland) #TeamMoth

As Suspected the Old Ladies were straight into the sweet stuff last night on my first night of sugaring this summer. 12 moths of 5sp was a steady start and at least the temp was higher than 4oC the night before! #TeamMoth
