The hardest part of personal growth is remembering.
Remembering to put into action all the smart shit you hear via social media, podcasts, books, wherever.
To help with that, I started a newsletter. Sanity, delivered directly to your inbox, once a week.
Seven years ago today, I put out a book called 10% Happier. I didn’t think anybody would read it. I’m glad I was wrong. The picture below (of Toby, who wasn’t even born then) has nothing to do with this tweet, I just thought it would make you more likely to read it. Thanks!
Proof that I’m out of the news game. Monitoring today’s events from London. Simultaneously explaining Big Ben and presidential indictments to little man.
There’s research to suggest that people who take vacation do better at work. For years, I was terrible at this. But we just finished up two weeks at the beach and I’m actually excited to get back to work. Also, a little embarrassed that it took me 52 years to learn his lesson.
Recently spent 2 weeks w this guy. Starting today, we’re launching a 5-part audio documentary on my pod. We hear the Dalai Lama challenged over whether his kindness rap is naive. We also talk about dealing w assholes, “wise selfishness,” & rebirth.
I am struggling with how to post this without it being a humble brag. Maybe there is no way around it. But damn, I find this moving. Thank you,
@hahnscratch
, for your work.
After many months of seeking approval from correctional staff, I’m finally bringing these books into San Quentin State Prison tomorrow - just in time for the last day of Mindful Prisons’ inaugural cohort.
Thanks

This is impossibly sad. A former guest on the
@10percent
podcast — the father of a little girl who was killed in Newtown — has died, in an apparent suicide. Go back and listen to episode

. Jeremy Richman was an incredible person.
A few months ago, I had a huge—and hugely inconvenient—resurgence of panic attacks. The advice in this book by
@DrLuanaMarques
really helped. Check it out! (And she will be on my pod this week.)
My son: I’m bored.
Me (trying to be slick): How does that feel in your body?
My son: Is that one of those meditation questions? Because I don’t want to answer it.
People say to me all the time: I can’t meditate bc I get distracted.
But noticing distraction is proof that you are meditating correctly!
The whole point is to see how bonkers your mind is— so that the chaos and cacophony doesn’t own you.
That’s mindfulness. A superpower.
Parenting fail? Or triumph?
My six year old son can tell you whether Paul or John is singing any particular Beatles song.
But only today did I teach him what a quarterback is.
A simple tactic that’s vastly reduced my asshole quotient: reflective listening. When somebody says something, repeat back, in your own words, the essence of their point. Humans have a deep desire to be understood. I now try to see how often I can get people to say, “exactly.”
Suffering from the various indignities of the our bananas election season? Perhaps this picture of our cat, Toby, wearing my son’s underwear on his head will help.
Look who I spotted at the ballpark:
@RonEClaiborne
!
(Also, Boston fans, I promise I am only wearing the Yankees hat so I don’t get a sunburn on my bald spot!)
Huge thanks to the
@VillageMtKisco
volunteer fire dept, who rushed over to help us with a minor smoke issue in our new house tonight. Alexander learned to respect volunteers who do dangerous work. Also, they gave us great pizza recommendations. Respect.
Overheard at a play date: my son telling his friend that the red hot chili peppers are a “rock band who wear socks on their weenies.” A clear parenting win.
This morning, my seven-year-old son asked me whether I could go one day without being annoying. “I believe in you,” he said. Pause. “Actually, no I don’t.”
2 Barbara Walters memories: 1. When I told her I was writing a book about meditation, she said, “Don’t quit your day job.” 2. Every time she saw my wife, she said, “You’re the most beautiful doctor in the world — you have to be on TV.” A true legend. We were lucky to have her.
Well this made my year. My wife giggled so hard when she saw this. We’ve never met,
@RealHughJackman
, but you should come on my podcast! Bring *your* wife— and
@SirPatStew
!
Every time that TV commercial comes on where the announcer says one of the risk factors for Covid is being over 50, my son turns around, looks at me, and says, “ha ha.”
Dear MLK, your message resonates as much right now as ever. Despite our current travails, my child — as well as all American children — will grow up in a more open and accepting society. Still much more to be done.

Spent the past six months working on this story... Deep in the Amazon rainforest, armed tribesmen who call themselves the “Guardians of the Forest" battle illegal loggers in the fight against deforestation. WATCH:
Self-love can be a cloying platitude. The stuff of throw pillows, Insta influencers, and spin instructors. But science shows it can make you better at everything and everyone. Check out latest for

My good friend
@SamHarrisOrg
has had a formative impact on my contemplative development. Today on the podcast we explore how someone who is fiercely engaged in the public square uses meditation to guide and sustain himself.
