WET pattern setting up for parts of central and southern Alberta, especially along the foothills!. Northwesterly upper flow with embedded disturbances will bring cool and unsettled conditions, with one or two more periods of heavy rain over the next 7-10 days. #abstorm

We checked the Ducks Unlimited Shell Buffalo Hills Conservation Ranch not far south of Calgary. It is an oasis of original prairie surrounded by cropland. Lots of prairie potholes, grasslands, and wildlife. Another very special place.

Was that geologist Peter Sherrington? If so, It was Peter who got the whole eagle migration story going. I was at Petro-Canada at the time and so was Peter.

@DaleALeckie I was working on Fairholme Range geology (Banff Formation) in June 1981, saw a number of eagles rise off Pigeon Mountain & sail northwards over the Bow River. The following year, another geologist was out earlier in the year & saw the migration peak & announced it to the media.

I have not seen them there. But I suspect they may use it as well. The next mountain range to the east is best for me.

St. Victor Petroglyphs overlook a broad glacial meltwater channel in southern Saskatchewan which creates an ethereal and mystical setting. Imagine the effect this ridge had on those who etched the images.

Before the last glaciation Milk River used to flow north into the South Saskatchewan River. The ice diverted the river so that it now flows south into the USA. Check out "The Scenic Geology of Alberta: A Roadside Touring and Hiking Guide".

The Cypress Hills in AB and SK are a story of ancient large rivers flowing to the Arctic, uplift, erosion, glaciation and then, diverted rivers to the south. A great place to visit and learn. Check out "The Scenic Geology of Alberta: A Roadside Touring and Hiking Guide".

During the last ice age, most of Canada was covered by kilometres of ice. One of the ice-free areas were the Cypress Hills which poked up above the ice as nunataks. Great scenery and lots of wildlife. Find out more in "The Scenic Geology of Alberta" and "Wildlife, Landscapes, and

Have you been to the "End of the World" in Edmonton, AB. Keillor Road is no more, as the river banks slip and slide into the North Saskatchewan River valley. Most of the river bank seems to be in motion. Check it out in "Scenic Geology of Alberta: A Roadside Touring and Hiking
