If interest wanes it won’t be because of NIL. It will be bc of the inability for fans to connect to players bc they become 6 month mercenaries at a school. This isn’t really that hard to understand. And if there is an impact it won’t be immediate but gradual.
I am 💯 with
@tsnmike
on this. People who say college hoops is “on the wane” or suffering bc of the portal/NIL ignore rights fees, TV ratings, efficiency numbers, etc. Not to mention the many players who stay or come bc of NIL money.
It was revealed last week
@GeorgiaFootball
is now paying Kirby Smart $13 million.
Audiences aren’t rejecting the games.
And the play is of high quality.
So why all the Armageddon stories about
@NCAA
sports because of the transfer portal?

Did you see the crowds in Alabama games this season? They said the same things about one and done players, Kentucky fans only rebelled when the results slipped.

Here’s the thing about erosion. It happens slowly over time not overnight. And using Alabama football as a proof point is somewhat stacking the deck. There are 330 other schools playing bball.

"the inability for fans to connect to players bc they become 6 month mercenaries at a school"
Isn't this situation increased by NIL? (Because there is an additional/larger $$ incentive for the best mid-major players to transfer to a major program, which creates a domino effect)

It's already happening in the low and mid majors. It will trickle up to the bottom of the power conferences. The casual fan will be disinterested from November until the tournament. If you only care about March than every thing is fine.

How many obsolete jerseys are out there that fans have purchased and the professional player moved on to a different team? Interest doesn’t wane because players leave. Interest only wanes when programs don’t compete. NIL helps everyone compete.
