The secure dock, a small Perspex-panelled room, separates defendants from the rest of the court. It should be reserved for the most serious cases, but is this how it's used?. ➡️Courtwatchers found that 83% of young adult defendants were in the secure dock - more than older adults.

When maturity was taken into account, courtwatchers found it most frequently resulted in an adjournment to gather more information, or additional support for the defendant. ➡️ Just 6.5% of hearings where maturity was mentioned resulted in reduced sentence severity or length.

With brain development playing such a large part in behaviour and decision-making, maturity should be an important consideration for magistrates and district judges. ➡️ Courtwatchers reported that maturity or age was mentioned in less than 1/3 of hearings.

"We’ve known for almost 20 years that the human brain does not fully develop until people are in their mid-20s. But for the most part, the CJS still treats an 18-year-old in the same way as a 50-year-old" @Robroballen. Read more below ⬇️. 🔗Full report: .
