GVRS isn't the only reason Baltimore is a safer city, but it deserves a prominent position in the narrative.

I may be biased here - I worked with former MONSE director Ganesha Martin and former Police Commissioner Michael Harrison to raise money for the strategy.

Glad to see Baltimore's success recognized, but disappointed that one of the elements that has actually been evaluated, GVRS, was left out.

When it comes to crime reduction, cops + community groups always beats either one on its own. Pass it along.

When explaining why crime is going up or down, the right answer is always, "It's for a bunch of reasons." It's never just one thing.

Read this excellent piece on the hugely important but largely overlooked decline in imprisonment. Kudos @KeithNHumphreys!.

“Until 2009, the lengthier sentences handed down during the preceding crime wave and the tendency of released prisoners to be re-incarcerated kept imprisonment rising even as crime declined," @KeithNHumphreys writes. But not anymore:

DC's approach to violence intervention needs to be completely revamped, but not discarded entirely. Also, while I understand Pinto's frustration, it should stay under the mayor's authority.

Let's be real: Neither @ONSEDC_ nor @cure_dc follows evidence based practices of providing good housing, job, and mental health services that get people on a better path. Bring in @Abt_Thomas from @UofMaryland Violence Interruption Center & get it right.

What to do? Pressure your local law enforcement to refuse these ICE agreements. Don't get on a soapbox, have a concrete focus on keeping folks safe in your community.

This damages public safety in so many ways: (1) it takes the focus off of serious crime, (2) it breaks the trust essential for effective crimefighting, (3) it targets everyday people, not hardened criminals, and (4) it actually helps the gangs it's supposed to hurt.

That's why, for a long time, almost all local police forces refused to participate in these agreements because it made fighting real crime harder. And many still do. But Trump's pressure, particularly in red states, is working. As the article says, more agencies are signing up.

It gets worse. Not only does indiscriminate enforcement damage communities, it actually helps criminal gangs like MS13 and 18th street. These gangs often terrorize immigrant communities. If their victims are afraid to go to the police, the gangs win.

Not surprisingly, there's no evidence these 287(g) agreements work to reduce crime. That's also because immigrants, if anything, actually commit crimes at lower rates than natural born citizens.

Myself and several colleagues summarized the evidence on this recently. "The consistent theme from these reviews is that approaches using community-oriented problem-solving are more effective and have fewer collateral consequences than more aggressive, reactive, and.
