I wrote this article for @atlasobscura about the potential for finding novel microbes in your backyard! If you know me, you know I love talking about #protists and I’m hoping this article encourages readers to try out hobby #microscopy! #scicomm #algae.

This week, Kevin Bird explains the events of the last 3 months, how science is funded in the United States, why it is being attacked so aggressively, and the ideologies behind these attacks. Found everywhere you get podcasts! #standupforscience #resist

I don’t use this account anymore but I know some of you are podcast listeners so letting you know the second season of Tiny Living Beings is out after two years away. The first ep is Bolton Howes, a sedimentary geologist, giving us a history of the planet!

This book teaches the basics, some of which I was already familiar w but it put everything in a biological context which helped me keep focus while working through it. There are two (maybe now three) other books in the series. Just wanted to spread the word if you’re looking!.

I posted a while ago asking for recommendations for courses or resources to learn Python as a scientist who works with big data. Most of the responses were that there isn’t a great resource. I bought this book secondhand and I’ve found it realllllly helpful! By Martin Jones.

testing format a student will typically encounter in grad school. All you can glean from someone’s performance on this test is that they are a good standardized test taker which means absolutely nothing when considering skills required for a research degree. Also, it’s expensive.

It has also been shown many times that GRE scores have no bearing on grad school success. If someone has made it through college, they have already made it through high school level math and English, which is all the GRE tests. Plus, the test format is so dissimilar from any.

I totally disagree. My biggest problem w the GRE was that in many states, it is only offered at a few random test centers that could be 4 or 5 hours from where someone lives. Inaccessible. Also, it’s basically the SAT. You might as well ask for their SAT scores from 10 years ago.

every graduate student application season i'm reminded-- cancelling the GRE was a horrible idea.

I want to take a really good Python course that’s going to help specifically with #python coding for big data and biological/genomic data applications. Does anyone have any recs? It doesn’t have to be a free course. Thanks!.
