Proud generalist. Vet, mum, teuchter: Fond of animals, largely tolerant of humans, happiest in wellies. Views my own.

Brilliant and thought-provoking presentation from Dr Heather Bacon at @VETTrust this morning. Seems we can't help animals without having compassion for people. Empathy goes a long way.

And she's done it! Astonishing, history-making, powerful and inspiring. The mental resilience needed to achieve this is incomprehensible (although if anyone was going to have it they'd be a mum and a vet 😁).
Jasmin Paris @JasminKParis finished loop five of the #BM100 in 59:58:21.

For clarity, I'm not arguing that dangerous dogs should not be euthanased. However, unless we start gathering data and evidence to help us understand these events, we won't succeed in preventing them. Having appropriate clinicians assess these animals has to be the start point.
Tragic news of another dog attack. The breed is not the only factor though. In what other crime do we destroy evidence before it can be examined? How can we learn about what drives these events, and hope to prevent them in future, if the animals are not alive to be assessed?.

Is there some common thread in this which is woven through rural veterinary practice, too? Community, variety, adaptability, resourcefulness, resilience - fulfilling work indeed.

This was such a good meeting! Great to see how the surveillance system swings into action when weird things happen on farm, and fab contributions on health planning and ocular disease from @edthrumsvets and @SRUCVets. Thanks to all who made it happen @SheepVetsoc @Ceva_UK.

Society is still so big on this kind of ageist self-sabotage, and with that, wasting a load of skills, knowledge and wisdom 🙄.
Spending my 59th birthday filming with @BBCCountryfile - particularly delightful as I was judged ‘too old’ for TV in my mid 40’s. I’m only here because of other’s campaigning (thank you!) but we’ve a way to go before older women are properly appreciated in media, and beyond.

#foodmiles are not an issue when generous farmers send you home with tatties. These Charlottes are enormous and spectacularly tasty, perfect with #scotchbeef chilli on a nippy autumn night 😘👌

I wrote a wee piece recently about my experience of career diversification and subsequent undiversification (as if life in mixed practice is ever anything other than diverse!). You can read it here if you're interested:.
In our latest issue, Cathy Scott and Eilidh Corr discuss why they still find being a vet satisfying and what might need to change for others to experience the same, in turn improving retention. Read the articles here:

Topical issues so far this morning at @VETTrust, covering sustainability in farming, Johne's control and responsible use of antimicrobials. Huge thanks to Tim Geraghty of @SRUCVets, Neil Fox of @ClydeFarmVets and Karen Bond of NMR for their engaging and practical presentations.
