This is another example of a working class corset that was marketed specifically to house maids. Notice the extensive use of flexible cording over boning and strong coutil in a drab color that would hold up to the sweats and stains of hard labor.
Haven’t been able to stop thinking about this corset I saw at The Corsetry Symposium last month. It’s so striking, not just because it’s a corset that uses flexible cording instead of boning for structure, but also because it’s clearly well-used and frequently repaired.

Incredible to think this is the cheap model when something made like this would cost hundreds now.

@CoraCHarrington The crimes I would do just to have something like this to work in. It would be so much better than my bra Not major crimes, but like stealing a pack of gum.

@alliebwoods The busk here is the stiff center front closure that goes the length of the corset

@tessa_juliette Getting something like this corset today would be a custom commission. Ignore the dummy who said AliExpress.

@CoraCHarrington Do you know the level of support and structure that would provide versus modern corsets?

@CoraCHarrington Would the maid have to buy her own undergarments? Or were certain additional items provided with the household uniform?

@CoraCHarrington Crazy to think this was for a house maid and is more refined than anything you’d find at your local mall today

@CoraCHarrington I remade this in college once for an assignment but solely based of the corsets and crinoline book and now I’m 1000% realizing what I did wrong in the construction thanks for posting this 😭🤣

@CoraCHarrington so surprised at the cording, more comfortable for 'maids' being so physical, and small in length whale bone, (cost I suspect) and the mending. O h h h h but 💕

@CoraCHarrington I'd linger by this display soaking up its stories. Textile rooms always feel like secret time machines, don't they?

@CoraCHarrington Cording over hips is far more comfy if you are bending all the time as a maid or any worker would be: interesting evidence of design for women in work during a time *certain* demographics claim women just stayed at home as mothers (who also needed such flexible physical support).

@CoraCHarrington Holy crap! A strip of steel down your front, to prevent you breaking the busk with constant stopping. Something’s gotta give, guess it was the unfortunate wearer’s innards!!
