#31DaysOfGraves #uniqueanimal Hedgehog at the feet of Sir John Kyle d1650, Much Marcle, not unique as it was the symbol of the family whose lands lay in Archenfield = Urchinfield, and their hedgehogs appear on other local monuments but this is the only one used as a footrest.

Artemisia Gentileschi's first known artwork, Susanna and the Elders (1610) was painted when she was just 17 years old. Here she empathetically portrays the young female victim of blackmail and threats of violence by older males #WomensArt

I would like one: partly because my room is cold, but also because I do like a good nest.
Box beds, prevalent during the medieval period, were once treasured for their comfort and warmth. About 600 years ago, these enclosed wooden beds were designed to retain the sleeper’s body heat, turning them into cozy sanctuaries during cold nights. Built with doors or sliding

The interrobang was a new punctuation mark created in 1962 by advertising executive Martin K. Speckter. Combining the question mark and the exclamation mark into a single glyph, the interrobang could be used to convey astonishment or disbelief. Sadly it never caught on.

That coat of Arms has a whiff of Prinny
On this Trafalgar Day I often think of Nelson’s elder brother, an unremarkable Norfolk clergyman who suddenly found himself made 1st Earl Nelson and 2nd Duke of Bronte and in possession of this gloriously mad coat of arms. A good day for less impressive siblings.

'The year 394 is recorded as the date of the imperially ordered extinguishing of the Sacred Flame of Vesta ... Without a priestesshood to preside over, Coelia Concordia stepped down from her post – or more accurately, she had that position abolished from under her.'
With the Christianisation of the Roman Empire, the old pagan cults started to fade... do we have know of the last Vestal? https://t.co/2nC3BTsVGD

This story always makes my gut turn over with deep, deep sorrow
18 October 1966. Elizabeth II granted a Royal Pardon to Timothy Evans, who was wrongly convicted and hanged for murder of his wife and child in 1950 at 10 Rillington Place, London. John Christie was the real murderer. It’s one of the greatest miscarriages of justice.

Charlie Rouse, one of London’s last night watchmen, stands outside his post on Brixton Road in 1850. Armed with a rattle tucked beneath his sash, a truncheon, a cutlass strapped to his waist, and carrying the traditional lantern, he represents the final era of an old city
