Coniston Stonecraft! We’re an eco-friendly company making products in the heart of the Lake District. Hewn and Crafted, Signage, kitchen, homeware, & bespoke
Help me understand this please!
The Environment Agency will not let the public know how safe BLACKPOOL beaches are - actively protecting the atrocious sewage spilling United utilities to the detriment of the public, who pay their wages
How has it come to this? Heads must roll!
Our county never ceases to amaze me, how old do you think this slate sign is? I’m 62 and remember it when I was a boy……..
…oh and the colours on the fells !!
Nmp
John Lewis, if you want to support British manufacturing we can make slate versions of this, just get in touch, ours are all made in Cumbria by timeserved craftspeople using only locally hewn stone, in a really eco friendly manner
Chinese version on left British version on right
Cumbria has one of the last Victorian Turkish baths in existence. It is beautiful beyond words, functioning and could be a significant Tourist draw.
What do you think the council plan to do with it?
Hi everyone, I am Ciaran and have recently started my apprenticeship here at Coniston stonecraft. Since starting my apprenticeship a month ago I have taken over all of our social media channels and on Twitter have grown our following by 20%. Thank you all for your support.
#Craft
I ve been rejected by the LDNP Gift shop Brockhole from listing our LD Hewn, LD crafted slate products “we’re happy with our Chinese slate products and there is no place in our shop for your locally crafted products”
Was the response Twitterati your thoughts?
I went to the “love windemere” event at brockhole yesterday
Incredibly depressing lots of handwringing lots of shoulder shrugging, and yet every single day United utilities discharge sewage 2200 times
The environment agency have NEVER prosecuted UU in the LDNP - UTTERLY USELESS
What are the laws on labelling ? because when retailers use a red tractor, put “British” prominently on a label, and use a Union Jack motif I don’t expect German apples
The coop should stop this and apologise to British farmers. I’m a member, a cooperator, and this incenses me.
The trees above Thirlmere are being felled. The environmental and economic damage this will bring breaks my heart, watch for flooding next year.
I know Utd Utilities have insatiable greed but someone must be able to stop this.

3 years ago we had to lockdown. Closed for three months, I had to take out another loan for our fledgling business to survive (not in original business plan & cash flow forecast) but we’re still here, just, repaying our debts and everyone’s faith in us. Thank you for your support
It’s lambing season, please keep your dog on a leash when you’re int fells, no excuses, no mine’s just a small dog, never bothers sheep, well behaved, just put it on the leash
Surprising Cumbria - Where’s this?
My fantastic sister Clare, and her friends are true advocates of the benefits of wild swimming, this was the view that greeted them a few weeks ago, but where is it, lake & fells?

Surprising Cumbria - Where’s this?
We are indeed blessed in Cumbria to have so many ancient places, this is my favourite, perhaps not as impressive as Stonehenge but some days you can marvel at is grandeur without anyone else being there, and the views are unbelievable.
A clock, made from guards wood quarry (coniston) slate with a lovely mudmark, made in Cumbria by Cumbrian craftspeople using the old shepherds counting system…hefted, if you’d like one please get in touch
I’m only allowed to show one piece at Derby, so I’ve chosen this lamp base George made using slate from the Broughton moor quarry, and fittings from S Lilley of Digbeth
What do you think?
Watendlath today, this is the hydroelectric plant that supplies the hamlet, and earns money by putting spare capacity into the grid. It sits well in the LDNP and I wonder why we don’t have thousands of similar all around the country, is it so difficult?
I had reason to visit the marvellous
@AmblesideHotel
salutation hotel ambleside on Saturday, my wife thinks I’m losing the plot when I got all emotional about these fantastic steps, quarried from the long gone kirkstone quarry, a beautiful bluey green and I’ll bet they’re 50 yo
I’m tempted to take this to Rheged on Saturday, for the forty farms fair, a lovely window sill illuminith, it looks fantastic with the sun streaming through it, sunrise/set
Well done
@BoothsCountry
Keswick, and Windemere not just stocking genuine handcrafted Cumbrian slate, but selling out regularly because authenticity & craftsmanship and location is popular (who knew)
Properly helping Cumbrian businesses, thank you 🙏
@BuyBritBrands
@NRFnews
This is how Lake District companies help each other and collaborate. Pure lakes the brilliant skincare company from Far Sawrey ask us to produce the slate trays that grace the bathrooms of fabulous hotels. Very appropriate very chic
A while back we transitioned from the big supermarkets to Aldi, can you guess why? (And no it’s not the prices)
The ‘feeling’ is people shop at Aldi and Lidl because they are cheap, but we support them because they support British farmers/producers, and I don’t think we’re alone
When we say - hand finished, hand made, craftspeople, authentic, made in the Lake District unique, skills, made in Cumbria- this is what we mean
If you are saying “hand finished” etc and not doing this we feel it’s ok to call you out for it
What do you think?
We must apologise to everyone who was expecting their delivery of coniston Stonecraft slate this week, we’ve had “issues” and so has our courier, we’ll get it to you presently, good things are worth the wait
Slate signs, built to inform, to last, and to look beautiful (have I missed anything?)
I don’t know how old this one is but it was there when I was a boy, so right for our climate
@HuttoninForest
That is the best news I’ve had all week THANK YOU!
I’ll pop by next week and intro myself and bring some samples
THANK YOU, GRACIAS, MERCI BEAUCOUP GRAZIE MILLE.
At the risk of sounding really strange, I found our coasters on display at
@BoothsCountry
windemere yesterday, and I did a little jig right there in the store.
I can’t imagine what I’ll do if the sold out stickers are there!
How many millions of ratepayers money was spent on the landscaping and pedestrianisation of Keswick town centre?
Why do they let UU defile all that good work without fear of prosecution?
When does unacceptable temporary, become acceptable?
It was our pleasure to welcome our wonderful MP Tim Farron yesterday. He wants to find out why small rural businesses don’t get the grants that are intended for them, we even taught him a bit of slate engraving

Unfortunately we won’t be open today
It’s not safe, we don’t think we have any electricity or water, I’m sure you can understand, it’s all part of trying to keep heritage crafts alive in the Lake District.
Pic from January
When the sun shines in Coniston it is full of surprises and joy, if you know where to look, these are in a shed on the side of a mountain at the end of an old railway line, and the picture doesn’t do them justice, do you like them?

This is also why I have strong views on 2nd homes, B2L, AirBnB and the damage it does to our communities
@JeffCMRT
A QR slate to match the bar top. Heft, High Newton, Cumbria
Who says a heritage craft business can’t also be a bit cutting edge?
Works well, looks fantastic, I wonder if there’s a market for these?
If you get into difficulties in our beautiful mountains and the CMRT don’t get to you as quickly as you’d like, don’t blame them, they were only looking for somewhere to park
If you want to see the lakes & Coniston at their best - I think that given the current weather forecast this next week might be cold, but unbelievably Gorgeous
Pic of coniston and tree swing looking north
On this day four years ago, we signed the paperwork from the receiver and Coniston Stonecraft was relaunched
A heritage craft business saved, but that was the easy part………
We’d like to thank
@timfarron
, Mark linnard and
@CumbriaHub
, for their help with our REPF grant application
Guess what…we were successful!
Now we crack on with our new Info-Retail-warehouse centre, Exciting Times
Let’s do this - why not?
Wrongs can be righted !
Why do we have to accept that good things are not possible here?
Other societies can, why can’t we? Is it because the wrong people are in charge, people without vision
A big shout out to Coniston tourist information centre, who are great supporters, they display an ever increasing range of our products & guide visitors up to our shed. it’s a mutually beneficial relationship because they make decent profits as well, win-win!
Cumbrian slate pastry boards, just waiting to go to
@Fortnums
Hand crafted by Andy from Broughton moor quarried green slate, a matching set?
It’s good to be selling our heritage craftwork in London
We’ve been asked to do a Cornish dialect clock, so we’ve used a slate that’s similar to Cornish blue grey slate and we’re pleased with the final result. Made in England from English slate, what do you think?
Surprising Cumbria - Where’s this?
A town that rarer makes it onto the Cumbria tourism rotation, but packed with History and pride. For extra points - the structure in the middle of the photo - what? Why? Name?
Ginty gave me a sneak preview of his latest illuminiths,
Subdued autumnal colours as requested by Mandy
The slate itself is really interesting too we polished it to bring out the beauty. What do you think?
Surprising Cumbria - where this?
Close to my heart this one, because back in the day I would March past this with Mrs McHardys cubs, behind the proud veterans of the wars (some from WW1)
It seemed like the whole town turned out
Does forestry England know that the slate in their gift shops is from China and Spain?, if it were trees would they class them as invasive species to be removed? 461 and 158kg of carbon footprint per tonne vs local slate 31 kg not good for the environment
Any contacts?
Yesterday, I spent an hour supporting the save Windemere campaign, 32weeks of protest against UUs continued dumping of sewage in our lake.
A peaceful protest that is gathering momentum
Where?
It’s not York or Chester, yet it has:-
a medieval castle with city walls,
A magnificent cathedral with rose window
A Victorian railway station at the end of an iconic line
One of the last Victorian Turkish baths
A racecourse, cursing stane, Romans, history
& few tourists
The Blind Chocolatier.
We are delighted to be collaborating with Stuart, who wants to sell genuine Cumbrian crafts alongside his superb chocolate in his shop at mill yard Staveley.
Thank you Stuart.
Labelling, here’s ours, it’s not much, but it’s honest, quite informative, makes no attempt to mislead and makes no claims that we can’t 100% back-up.
We’re proud to put it on our work, but what do you think?
Who says that heritage crafts have to live in the past, please copy, repost, try it, comment, follow, like, BUY etc. spread the word and fly the flag high for Cumbrian slate masons
People who achieve the Bob Graham Round leave me in AWE, and they get a paper certificate.
We’d like to change that by making a trophy that really acknowledges the feat in the most beautiful way, views on our latest collaboration with Sarah from wild indigo glass?
Quandary time,
Ginty has made this, so now we’re searching for a piece of slate to do it justice- ordinarily we’d put it with a piece of beautiful green slate from the Elterwater or Peatfield or Broughton moor quarry, but it might need some high fell or Guards wood or Kirkby or.
A big thank you to the buying team at Fortnum and Mason for having the faith to back a small Cumbrian craft slate brand, it does make me wonder why northern retailers are less inclined. Eco, green, local craft support help are all nice words, actions count more
Just 3 Elterwater slate coasters, made by George
Yes Chinese slate coasters are cheaper if you don’t mind about the 14x greater carbon footprint and the dubious labour used….but they are perhaps 1/500th as beautiful.
Why don’t ore British gift shops sell these?
It must be very sunny down here in Somerset, lots of solar farms on prime agricultural land.
I passed a huge one opposite the massive Morrisons d.c. yet there wasn’t a single panel on the acres of roof.
Am I missing something?
Surprising Cumbria - where’s this?
A relatively easy one this week, seen by millions each year, but you’ve got to take your hat off to whoever created such a fabulous legacy.
