These contests involve the indiscriminate killing of #animals over a specified time and conducted with the aim of reducing predator populations without regard for population/ecosystem dynamics, ecological impact, or intrinsic value of individual animals.

The wildlife team consistently pushed for "transparent, fact-based media lines released to reflect the conclusion of our investigation as soon as possible" after determining the Feb. 12 cougar attack never happened.

Fantastic article. Many great statements including: "this wrong-headed decision was made behind closed doors by people who apparently fear public debate as much as they fear bears. Alberta’s grizzlies, and people, deserve better" ~ /via @globeandmail

Grizzly bears have long been a point of intense public interest. Any decision as consequential as re-opening a hunt should have been made only after transparent, open public consultation

We are deeply saddened by devastating reports from the ongoing wildfire that has spread to the townsite of Jasper, Alberta. Our thoughts are with the people of Jasper. The town and park hold a special place in the hearts of Canadians and people from around the world.

The #Jasper situation is bleak this hour but word is they are not giving up. Here are some firefighters headed to town just now to try to save it. More are on the way soon, I’m told. The blaze is on Jasper’s doorstep right now. #yeg #abfire

Albertans with a hunting license have been invited to apply for authorization to kill a "conflict" grizzly bear. The Minister @dtloewen is standing by a decision that won't reduce conflict, isn't based on science, and goes against the recovery plan. Email him, cc me. Be heard!

While the new grizzly bear non-hunt is complicated, what's crystal clear is that @dtloewen isn't basing these new regulations on data, expert opinion, or government documents. What's he basing it on? Your guess is as good as mine..

EDITORIAL: The return of a measure of grizzly bear hunt – particularly without public consultation – is the latest failing of the provincial government when it comes to managing wildlife.

Minister Loewen says the amendments don't change anything and that it's not a hunt. But yet he just admitted that "the public wildlife management responders" will be able to keep the bears they kill... How is this not a trophy hunt?!?! https://t.co/dasN58zP3c

The Alberta government will permit selective grizzly bear hunts should they meet certain criteria, raising concerns from environmentalists who worry about the impacts on a threatened species.

A terrible decision, riddled with perverse incentives for hunters and rife with possibilities to corrupt the system for granting hunting permits. There is no way any wildlife biologist or conservation expert recommended this hare-brained scheme for grizzly management.

WHY is the Alberta government allowing THREATENED grizzly bears to be hunted if they are deemed a "problem"? The Wildlife Act was changed recently WITHOUT public consultation nor legislative review by Minister Todd Loewen.

They might not be calling it a "hunt", but recent moves by @dtloewen allow for public killing of bears. This won't resolve conflict. It will result in more dead bears. There is no data to support this and it goes against the Provincial Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan.

👏Hunting👏is👏NOT👏an👏acceptable👏management👏approach👏for a threatened👏species. Grizzly bears have a very slow reproductive rate, and trophy hunting could undo all the recovery of the last decade.
