#RefugeeWeek2023 Working away ready for Report Stage of #IllegalMigrationBill has some sense of appropriateness but does not feel like celebrating the wonderful gift refugees are for us.

I am proud of how many churches and communities have been involved in the Community Sponsorship scheme, fulfilling the call from Jesus to welcome the stranger. 1/2

The House of Lords sat throughout the night, only rising at 4.15am, to give essential scrutiny to Govt's Illegal Migration Bill, on such issues as detention of children & pregnant women. @BishopSouthwark spoke after 2am, supporting amendments on vulnerable people in detention.

And thank you to @BishopSouthwark for sticking it out too and speaking in favour of the amendments which @BishGloucester has co-sponsored highlighting the moral concerns with what is proposed. Debate is still going at

Frankly disgraceful that the govt, having only allowed the barest minimum debate in the commons, is insisting that debate on whether pregnant women should be subject to detention and the use of force is taking place only after midnight when most peers have had to go home. 1/

This from @MigrationWatch is untrue. The Archbishop of Canterbury has not said we must grant asylum to all who seek it. Unless 'effectively' in this context means, 'not actually'.
If senior people like the Archbishop of Canterbury effectively say we must grant asylum to all who seek it, however they get here, all it does is encourage more to come... π‘

On Monday the Bishop of @CofE_Cov supported an amendment by @AlfDubs to the Illegal Migration Bill. He said: "Preventing people from exercising their right under international law to even claim asylum is neither workable nor a morally credible position." https://t.co/gIIARQ8OY7
