Champions know how 2 win, they also know how 2 handle tough moments.
@amandalorenz18
is a CHAMPION. Her last college @ bat; fighting back tears,as her teammates come to focus on her:read her lips: “BACK TO THE GAME” as she tells her teammates to refocus on US not ME. Wow!
Good stuff from Austin Riley on the 3 things he focuses on : balance/posture; get on plane early & letting that barrel whip thru the ball. He CHANGED from “knob to the ball” b/c he kept keeping beat / slicing 95 mph fastballs. Lots of nuggets in this video.
Barnhill after getting pulled &watching her teammate get the strikeout. That’s PASSION TO WIN. That’s TEAM. That’s a great “sister” & teammate. No pouting. No whining. Wow! What a true competitor! Mental toughness. She will be a winner in life when tough times come. Good stuff.
Mike Martin after winning Regional & going back to Omaha-blows a kiss to his wife & says “we are going back baby” then let’s his competitive “joy” be expressed. I pray that at that age I still have THAT KIND OF PASSION & will to win. The GAME rewarded
#11
for loving the GAME!
Probably the BEST swing so far in the WCWS. Kvistad. Her timing & sequence is so good. Plus, she competes mentally EVERY pitch. She has been LOCKED IN.
Aaron Judge on deck. People just assume that he is big & strong, which he is, but look @ his mechanics & what he is trying to FEEL on deck. Pretty good “stuff”.
this is the STORY of opening weekend. I watched 3 games; props
@MelyssaLombardi
impressive; esp her confidence in her system & getting her players to buy in & execute it @ a HI LEVEL on a BIG STAGE. Winning w scrappers, not top tier recruits is an “ART”! It’s only 4 games but WOW
Looked who dropped by in my neighborhood today to get “tuned up” before going to play Pro Ball & for us to catch up and hang out. I enjoy EVERY MOMENT I’m around her. She made me throw BP for over an hour & she kept challenging me “that’s all you got” “bring it”; she is so good!
DJ Sanders:Oregon SS who transferred from ULL for her senior year played 13 games this year vs teams in this year’s World Series. She is hitting 368BA, 4 HRS & slugging % .763. Not too bad for a kid who grew up playing slow pitch from Columbus, MS - dreams do come true; WCWS!
PLAYER DEVELOPMENT is the “new” money ball - the new frontier. Can you make your players better day by day - can you enhance your players’ skill sets, can you build elite PLAYERS? Do you embrace science & technology to make your players better? It’s time.
The best homerun trot I’ve seen all season. GO -GO -GO:touch 1stbase -GO, YEAH! So much emotion on every pitch! It’s been a great WCWS.Remember the preparation &hard work &sacrifice that has gone into this moment, literally thousands of hours. It’s the HARD that makes IT SPECIAL
Truly tragic. That stretch of I-10 especially now with the road construction & the high volume of 18 wheelers is so dangerous. This is so tragic. Our prayers & thoughts are with the Glasco family. May GOD hold her in the palm of HIS hands & make her to shine like the sun! 🙏
WOW! It’s not only the catch but she is anticipating the throw for the double play. I’m impressed more with her instincts for the game - that’s as good a play as it gets.
Here is Josh Donaldson talking about using his “scap” versus his hands 2 get the barrel on plane early.Go back 2 my Austin Riley & Mallee tweets & try to reconcile what all 3 are saying. Hitting is getting lots of “parts” in right sequence 2 get the barrel on plane w the ball.
Mechanics are only “part” of what makes a great hitter; mindset and approach are what separate the good from the great. In softball, too much “bad” advice about “get your foot down early”; read the pitch as you are loading & FIRE EVERY TIME still you decide “NO”. Great clip!
Learning environments matter & effects performance. In sports, it’s the margin b/w greatness & mediocrity. The pursuit of excellence & being an eternal learner & open minded to good info is key to being a champion. Listen to Verlander describe what’s going on w Astros pitching.
Wow:during the AllStar game, Jeff Albert, Houston Astro’s hitting coach JUST wrote MY name on his STAND UP FOR CANCER poster-all of US fighting cancer CANNOT do it w/o the love & support from SO MANY.I text him back & told him to score some runs&win the game +get me in the dugout
I admire his moral courage esp in his final moments of his College Career &his sense that it’s his responsibility 2speak out so he leaves the game better than when he got there. No matter what the scoreboard says:he is a WINNER; CHAMPION that learned the real lesson of competing
consider:watch her head(which is her AXIS)when she stretches & when she rotates, her head and her AXIS remains constant. At contact, we would say she is “back”-her AXIS remaining “relatively” still & stretching & rotating around it, is what creates launch angle, not a hands move
JD got cut in 2013 bc his lower body load/mechanics were about getting down early & now he is MVP by fixing it. Degrees of freedom or stability:as coaches or hitters it’s a GOOD thing to know the difference. let the hitter self organize TIMING instead of dictating foot down early
DJ : you are so AWESOME! That’s such a beautiful swing - lol- but your competitive spirit & love of those around you is make make you special to me! WCWS - you earned it!
Great PERSPECTIVE from Coach before the start of game 1 of the WCWS : “relentless pursuit” thru the highs & lows. That’s the MINDSET - finding the balance by not being too hyped —staying focused on the task at hand—playing the game the same way that got you here. Good stuff!
watching SpringTraining LISTEN to what MLB teams r doing to enhance PLAYER DEVELOPMENT..”this is what teams are doing,finding guys who have a different teaching method that has worked in other places”. It will seep down to all levels-SCIENCE based coaching enhances PERFORMANCE
A great hitter results from drills that replicate game speeds& game reads& game reactionsWarm up on the T but practice at game speed. Work in&out. Change speeds.Figure out your weakness then work hard to FIX it.Get objective feedback,exit velo,launch angle,not just put it in play
If u are 12U sball player & watching these college games: the real take away- learn how to hit. College sball needs HITTERS/offense. Forget about ground balls & waiting for the other team to make a error. Hit a BOMB! Swing right. Get a machine. Work hard - it’s you vs the ball!
Congrats to my friend Craig Snider,Asst Coach
@FLA
ST NATIONAL CHAMPIONS. All the sacrifice away from your kids& hitting fungos&throwing BP &all the sweat so a player can take one more swing &all the hours scouting&watching video showed in your team’s performance💍👍well deserved
Advice from Saban -be accountable for your own performance & preparation, keep working hard. from Kobe - block out all the negative clutter from family & friends who want to blame others & shortcut the process; compete don’t whine. Be grateful. Embrace the hard to be successful.
NO WAY!Lol.WHO was poking fun @ me? very fortunate 2 have players who really bought in 2 what we were teaching & was lucky that the GAME rewarded “us” w much success. But it IS a journey-still learning-lots of trial& error &lots of sweat; lots of trips 2 the hardware store too.
Remember when we used to laugh and poke fun of
@CoachMikeLotief
when we started seeing this on TV. We made fun of them for YEARS and the joke was on us the whole time.
Do u want to be a great hitter then be a great person & make sure “your” teammates SAY what they SAY about Yelich. Oh yeah: be the hardest worker & never get complacent about outcomes; keep getting better day by day. Every pitch MATTERS esp the ones before & after the games
When you get that kind of stretch, separation or resistance bw the hips &the torso and you can create it as the ball is “on top of you” - also called timing: that’s a recipe for SERIOUS POWER. BTW she is not swinging down or trying to hit a ground ball. Good stuff Coach Salters.
Athletes today have to be able to control their own thoughts esp with all of the naysayers, clutter & “trash” out there. Here is a strategy “how to take out the mental trash”
been watching ALOT of college sball -too many players PRE-STRIDE or get their foot down EARLY. Bad idea. causes “stall” or “pause” & robs the hitter of power. Watch video of elite hitters hone in on their hip action - they all start moving early but they do not get down early.
Hitting is SO much MORE than CUES; its science & art. Biomechanics& movement patterns&motor learning. Also: hitting is timing & pitch recognition & hand/eye. Most of all: hitting is a MINDSET; someone who is competitive yet cerebral. Who refuses to lose but knows how to win.
Here is the next article on Pelvis Loading from Swing Attractors on
@ExtraInningSB
; this is a 5 part series on the hips/pelvis & comes out every Tuesday. Enjoy!
99.9% of the time, commitment really means NEVER GIVING UP. It means continuing to say YES to the thing you’ve already said YES to before & then NEVER GIVING UP!
Love UNDERDOG STORY! There is NO reason that in our sport/sball just the Power 5 schools go to WCWS.Most of our daughters will go to mid majors. Its time to put pressure on administrations at those schools to “commit”to WINNING & expanding opportunities for female S/As. WHY NOT?
PLAYER DEVELOPMENT is the key.Everybody thinks its recruiting/trading for the right player/transfers,but what makes great teams GREAT are DEVELOPING the hidden gems:Dodgers with Turner,Taylor&Muncy.the fun of coaching/feather in the cap is unlocking the potential of a hidden gem!
OKC
@DenhamAlyssa
u deserve 2be on the biggest stage in college sball b/c U HAVE THE BIGGEST HEART!Great resolve; relentless passion. U gave every little girl watching the blueprint 2OKC; u don’t have 2throw 70mph;just execute pitches& believe in yourself & your team!
Thanks to
@slugfest2019
@jeffmalbert
@DLawson_Yankees
for this wonderful opportunity to present at Slugfest - this is definitely a highlight of my journey & a great venue-platform to continue to contribute to THE GAME I LOVE
Rotation AFTER contact is meaningless. The bat is only in contact with the ball for 1/2 of a millisecond. Trying to apply force AFTER contact may be wasted energy. Keep hacking away! Good luck with your at bats this week.
I loved my visit 2 TN softball; Ralph &
@KarenWeekly
have built an incredible learning environment in Rocky Top. Pat Summit gets lots of recognition 4 HOW she won; IMO, Ralph & Karen are now the TN “rock stars”;over 20 years of service & winning at TN & based on TN VOLS values.
Thanks to
@adamamin
@ascarborough
4 the 👍;
@LexElkins20
was a “stud”-she hit ZERO HRS her frosh year @ TX TECH & 75 HRS her next 3 yrs @ Ragin Cajun. It’s good to see her passing IT on to others & making our sport better. It is the technology & the video etc but it’s mechanics 2
Watching ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. Jessica Mendoza
@jessmendoza
is “SO GOOD”; smart, prepared, articulate & knows THE GAME. Just a thought: baseball hiring managers out of the TV booth : I’d hire Jess! Trust me, she would WIN!
Talent is not capped. Athletes are figuring out how to get more out of their talents/ abilities. It takes a GROWTH MINDSET. Optimize your talents by changing your mindset.
@KateMalveaux
-so proud of Chris to outslug GA.
@MizzouSoftball
this team is gritty;all frosh& sophs in starting lineup; they just keep hacking away.
@CoachMalveaux
great job of not only teaching the mechanics but getting those players to fight & believe👏
Happy 80TH Birthday to my wonderful mom.The most compassionate,caring,loving mother we could all ask 4. She taught us how 2 be Good Samaritans; she taught us how 2 have moral courage-David & Goliath;& she taught us 2 have confidence & pursue excellence. A beautiful example of JOY
Epstein’s “torque” position started the rotation vs linear debate in the late 90s. It’s a good thing that rotation WON & the discussion has evolved to the best ways to perform it. Stay true to the kinetic chain-I’d rather have the science on my side than working against me!
Lillie Grotenhuis wonTX State Championship today
@AtascocitaHS
. Her older sisterMiranda was
@ULL
w me & now @ W TX A&M. Lillie is holding a photo of her daddyJimbo who died of a massive heart attack on the sball field
@age
44 while coaching his daughters. Sball is an awesome bond
Bombs away! DJ hits her 1st PRO HR. There is not a better person & competitor I’ve ever been around. CONGRATS - she will inspire the next generation to play the game RIGHT (hard work - embrace the challenge-get better everyday- dream BIG) & with humility & respect & perspective!
What makes Trout worth $430 million? When I was @ ABCA convention, a coach who spent time around him & I were talking- he said Trout has the thoracic mobility to create variability in his upper body/ROM to cover every different quadrant of the zone. WITH POWER. That’s “SPECIAL”
Going back 2 my prior tweets about HOW 2 GET THE BARREL ON PLANE EARLY-here is Dante Bichette.Figuring out HOW to do this is 🔑. Remember there are LOTS of muscles/tendons/ fascia; involve as many as possible 2 find the right sequence. It’s more than just 1 cue or one drill.
Awesome. The whole team shows up to show their support to
#KonawaStrong
b/c they understand we are
#StrongerTogether
; thanks Coach Weekly for all you’ve done to make sure sball is a platform/voice to bring US TOGETHER & make US BETTER.
@Csalt19
“some” people been laughing at me for a looong time; look @ those goofy blue shoes. I laugh @ myself too. In coaching, EVERYBODY is a critic. You can either focus on your critics or focus on your passion. I say: be courageous; keep moving forward; trust the plan.
Rest In Peace, Charla Whitton Brett; my wife’s older sister. Prayers for her two high school sons. She was a WARRIOR vs cancer- she won EVERYDAY by smiling, loving others, fighting, stay positive, finding meaning in her pain. She is now “our ANGEL- the true meaning of Easter!
DJ can hit BOMBS : I love her approach & her opposite field power. Not too bad for a MISSISSIPPI girl to be an NCAA ALL AMERICAN, WCWS SS, & now playing NPF. WOW - great story that can inspire many; plus she has moral courage to stand up for what’s right - always! Good stuff!
Look @ this quartet - all MLB hitting gurus- talking hitting after hours with a standing room only crowd in the lobby: Ecker/Reds,Stone/Cubs, Graham/Brewers,Everson/Rockies. The willingness to share not only the info but more importantly their time. Awesome learning environment.
Thank u!I’m a nerd.lots of opportunities STILL:motor learning,skill acquisition,etc.Our sport has plenty of GROWTH left,esp GLOBAL.Little bitty ULL w no support staff:6 WCWS. Be an eternal learner: try to think outside of the box; always reading, thinking, make THE GAME BETTER!👍
It is incredible how far ahead of the game
@CoachMikeLotief
has been for such a long time.
Movement work. Kinetic chain principles. Barrel turns. Machine work. Challenging BP.
Love hearing stories from other coaches who have crossed paths with him.
SBALL embracing SCIENCE & new technology & all these young, passionate, smart, progressive coaches willing to role up their sleeves & get after it,helping their players be the best & answer their questions w real facts vs just saying this is how we always did it is a GOOD THING!
Same player - different movement patterns! By understanding things like how the pelvis interacts with the legs - it can “change” your posture for instance and help you “transform” & hit a couple of bombs & reach your God-given potential & achieve your dreams.
DJ & Aleah are getting HOT at the right time! even if they don’t a hitter is a hitter & an All American is a AllAmerican. In OUR sport its the HITTER vs the BALL, it ain’t got nothing to do with what conference the BALL is in. It’s the same ball thrown from the same rubber. Lol!
Rotation is key to an elite swing and it especially shows up during the hitter’s coil. The coil creates tension in the rear glute and takes the “slack” out.
EXCEL 18U(Dallas,TX) won the USA National Championship tonite going a perfect 10-0. Great job to the players & coaches 🏅👏& a “special shout out” to Kristel Williams for her dedication to the organization & winning a Championship in only year 2. WOW🏅
According to announcers, it’s the 1st time since 2008(Lawson’s first year @ KY) that Kentucky has given up back to back double digits run. Think about all those good SEC teams over the past 10 years, & your group
@CoachMalveaux
is the 1st to do it. Congrats. Keep HACKING AWAY!
When I think of Bill Buckner, I think of this great quote. His place shall NEVER BE with those cold & timid souls who know NEITHER KNOW VICTORY NOR DEFEAT. My advice: DARE GREATLY & forget about the naysayers - those cold & timid souls.
Here u go Hugo; one of the best proving that if you are efficient w your movements,you can be a GREAT power hitter, no matter your height or size.Great hitters come in all packages. She had the high leg kick & barrel wag but don’t be confused by that (just her style&comfort zone
The athletic family was his WHOLE LIFE-taking care of OTHERS was who he was. Despite being told no, no, no over&over& over he kept marching on &on &on. Always SERVING OTHERS. May GOD be as gentle & loving & compassionate to Lynn as he was to ALL OF US. He made US ALL BETTER. RIP
For those who haven’t heard, our longtime Equipment Manager Lynn Williams has passed away. After being part of Ragin Cajuns Athletics for over 30 years he definitely will he missed. RIP Big Lynn
Alyssa so proud of you for your fight & courage & competitive spirit; you stood strong & snapped the losing streak by pitching with guts, grit & fight. Awards are never the proper measure of contributions- you are a winner w moral courage & passion & heart! & fearless, Congrats!
• 11-3
• 1.70 ERA (8th in the Pac-12)
• .223 opponent average (10th in the Pac-12)
• 4 shutouts
Congrats to Alyssa Denham on her first career all-Pac-12 recognition!
Thanks
@sportsiren
for shout out @ NFCA keynote address.Holly Rowe is a ROCK STAR.Your pictures w me from our WCWS are front & center on my desk. When you get interviewed by Holly in OKC you prob had a good year. We are joined in our fight ag cancer & inspiring HOPE for others🙏
Here is a feel drill; either put your bottom hand on your back shoulder or just extend your bottom arm out in front of you & try swinging without turning your shoulders and try to feel/emphasize the posterior /back muscles
Sball has taken me on some incredible journeys:WCWS,life time memories;the last year it has challenged me ANEW:fighting to force a school I was at for 18 yrs to treat its female athletes fairly & now:growing the sport GLOBALLY; it’s the next barrier sball must conquer; its time!
In FLA to help train 50 Chinese players some who played in NPF,some participated interntl competition& some newbies from SEPT 28-DEC 4;there is a Chinese coaching staff/management team in charge. After 12/04 they return to China to complete their training. Great group/having fun
Swing training should:transfer to game performance; be strength specific 2hitting; works on tensing before action; ultimately increases barrel speed; create swing variability; can make adjustments (time&location) in response 2a pitch:IOW training that is sports specific 2HITTING
Split grip has NOTHING to do with hitting a riseball evidenced by all the old time baseball players who used it. 2 things: splitting the grip encourages the hands to work separate & independently :so good for females who are torso & TH dominant . Also it gives more barrel control
“Crucify him” they yelled to Pilate. Whether we are the ones yelling or the ones being destroyed,torn down or the one sitting in false judgment of others & abusing their power, Good Friday is a time for reflection that our sufferings have purpose if we are committed to redemption
Coach Tony Robichaux-Ragin Cajuns Baseball&his fmly need our 🙏/❤️as he fights after multiple heart surgeries.2015 he won his 1,000th game.Listen2 how he overcame the odds yet maintained the highest standards.🙏4 a good man of strong faith&hi integrity🙏
May GOD hold Tony in the palm of HIS hands&make him 2 shine like the sun.Robe taught &preached the values of love/service 2others; he taught how to compete to better handle life-he lived his faith everyday.He believed to his core the final score is eternal life. Pray for US now❤️
Coach Tony Robichaux-Ragin Cajuns Baseball&his fmly need our 🙏/❤️as he fights after multiple heart surgeries.2015 he won his 1,000th game.Listen2 how he overcame the odds yet maintained the highest standards.🙏4 a good man of strong faith&hi integrity🙏
Bellinger-2017Rookie of YR 2being BENCHED last yr-the game HUMBLES U then “die hard” 2 become twice as good this the process-LISTEN 2THE GAME rather than blame or lose confidence in yourself-find solutions thru hard work; make your weaknesses your strength
What gives me chills isn’t just watching elite athletes compete: but watching the crowd react & support & cheer the competitor WITHOUT moral judgment or labels & Tiger is feeding off their acceptance. Everybody deep down pulls for people to OVERCOME ADVERSITY; I DO.
#EmbraceHARD
!
Life is perspective!@ Natl Sball convention Holly Rowe from ESPN used this slide that sums me up “JUST KEEP GOING, esp WHEN IT GETS HARD”. No matter what the adversity is: cancer or criticism or whatever, JUST KEEP GOING. Keep showing up, don’t back down, ESP WHEN IT GETS HARD👍
Thanks
@cindybristow
4the wonderful opportunity to present @ the Summit. My favorite slide-LEARN to pick up the speed & direction of the ball in the 1st 1/3-challenge yourself at practice;don’t waste your time on 58mph meatballs right down the middle. Dream big,work smart
Mancini;this dude is something else- a REAL competitor w a humble heart. I don’t know about u,but I just gave him a standing ovation. Understands what it takes 2fight & beat cancer-no arrogance just humility &gratitude 4the chance/opportunity 2compete another day. SO INSPIRING!
Coaching is a VOCATION; it awakens the heart &engages the soul.Competition, pursuit of excellence, eternal learning,& paradoxically:being around injustice r all components of coaching.Get out of boring offices &go where real problems r, serve others, care deeply& strive valiantly
Thanks 4 the shout out-never knew people thought I was crazy 4 the split grip; lol. can’t wait to see full protocol u did with FloSball; your passion is unmatched & your willingness to explain & explore & experiment is good for our sport. Happy to be on this journey TOGETHER!
Wow- talk about SPLIT GRIP. If a player is top hand dominant & squish the bug and back shoulder to the ball, the split grip is a good “drill”-“feel” for bottom hand involvement, pivot point reminder, & to encourage more “spine” movement rather than “shoulder turn”. Try it!
This is a great view from the umpire camera:look how “deep”/how far the pitch has traveled BEFORE she starts her rotation OR when she begins her launch or gets to TT.These hitters are very good with only 35/100th of a sec (which is equivalent to a 100 mph FB in MLB).impressive!
Follow up on the Austin Riley tweet-here are some ideas from Mallee the hitting coach of the Phillies on some of the same “stuff”-barrel path, on plane, posture, rotation, etc. It’s hard in 90 seconds to adequately address-but good “nuggets” to keep the mind thinking/searching.
#KonawaStrong
. Our prayers & thoughts are with the Konawa Jr High SOFTBALL TEAM & their families & the community after the horrific bus wreck. May Rhindi Rest In Peace & May God hold her in the palm of HIS HANDS & make her to shine like the sun; as we await Easter/resurrection.🙏
You are in OUR prayers & thoughts; you are an inspiration to US all; get your hitting video out & get back to work on figuring out how to make swings better. Cancer picked on the wrong “dude” - keep fighting Coach!
Throat surgery was completed yesterday, cancer tumor removed. I just went through the most uncomfortable & painful 24 hrs of my life. But I am alive, recovering and have a very bright future. Thank you all for your love & support!
@DenhamAlyssa
@CoachCandreaUA
CONGRATS,so happy 4 both of y’all. The journey back to the WCWS is worth IT.Enjoy it! don’t take it 4 granted. It’s a “special” accomplishment & indescribable experience whether it’s your 1st time or 20th something. No better feeling
looking
@video
of great hitters r analyzing your hitter,synch up video(1)before pitcher’s release 👀4 tensing 2)toe touch👀4 stretch bw hips&shoulders(3)contact👀barrel path. Focus on kinetic sequence(1)emphasis on pelvis&plane of mvmt(2)torso esp the lats(3)barrel path esp wrist
Split gripTy Cobb.Contrary 2popular belief, it is not about better barrel control.The natural FEEL of a untrained hitter is knob 2ball aka both hands moving in similar direction ie forward.Split grip attracts the movement pattern of the hands 2work in a bilateral SEPARATE pattern
Some think or mistakenly teach that the hands have to go back or has to be a scap pinch or bat wrapping motion,it’s possible but not the most efficient way. Ocasio’s swing is simple but she creates the stretch to make it powerful too,study lots of hitters & lots of trial & error
@ SlugFest,
@jeffmalbert
@DLawson_Yankees
talking hitting but
@drewcotner
battling stage 4 throat cancer touched our hearts w his courage by living his BUCKET LIST! An eternal learner, believing in what’s possible & having a growth mindset. Prayers & hope!
Great group of athletes this weekend at THE ACADEMY @ HR Alley! Thanks to all the parents & athletes. Checked out the PAC 12 Sball network & told y’all Aleah & DJ & Denham would be “aight”, 5 HRS and some big wins. Also proud of Summer for her 20 Ks. As I said today: DREAM BIG!
Jeff Albert is a ROCK STAR - standing room only at the ABCA Expo Hall. Talking hitting — with Jason Ochart; Funny how I knew him when he was a G.A. ; eternal learner; smart; progressive; solution seeker - problem solver. Good stuff!
