We developed a method that uses deep learning to identify chinstrap penguin prey captures from accelerometer and depth biologging data. The paper with reproducible analysis code, led by Stefan Schoombie, is available at Funding through @AntarcticFund

«Once upon a time, I fell in love with a sorcerer…» Academically, that is 💌🧙‍♂️. I had the pleasure of writing a «Research Highlight» for @AnimalEcology for a fantastic paper on integrated models, black magic (Gaussian processes), and @marionseals83:.

Our results suggest that female dispersal and connectivity between distant populations (Marion, Kerguelen and Crozet archipelagos), along with increased adult survival, were the main drivers responsible for the rebound of the Marion Island elephant seal population since the 1990s

The analysis contains several points of interest for methods-oriented researchers: using Stan and Gaussian Process priors to fit the IPM; and using an iterative fitting procedure that dramatically reduce model-fitting times, facilitating the use of more complex/realistic models

We sought to understand the demographic drivers of a rebounding southern elephant seal population on Marion Island using the IPM–tLTRE models. More generally, we explore how simulation and sensitivity analyses can help evaluate the robustness of conclusions from IPM–tLTRE models

🆕Published today, our new @marionseals83 IPM/t-LTRE elephant seal paper, superbly led by Murray Christian. The paper uses Gaussian Process priors to provide ‘local’ regularisation while estimating the contribution of immigration to population dynamics

Our 30-year study (3) revealed mother-daughter similarities in breeding phenology; (4) indicated high individual consistency of arrival date within females; (5) found no strong relationship between breeding phenology and measures of environmental variation.

Our 30-year study (1) highlights strong relationships between the timing of different parts of the annual cycle (moult and breeding phenology); (2) shows associations between breeding arrival dates and individual traits (wean date as a pup, age and breeding experience); (cont. )
