In closing Moral Man, Immoral Society, Niebuhr makes that point that a valuable illusion is that our collective lives can achieve perfect justice. This is both necessary but also dangerous to progress. Let us hope he says, that reason doesn't destroy it before its work is done.

Out with the dog and reflecting on why I prefer spring and autumn to summer or winter. To me summer and winter are inert seasons lacking any dynamism or possibility. As bookends, spring and autumn both offer possibility. And the clothes are better too.
