Proud Captain of the best damn ship in the Navy,

Leaders need to be into the morale building business. It’s not as much about time off and cookies, although they’re super helpful. It’s about making people feel valued & part of something greater than themselves. Leaders literally control this power. And it produces results.
This captain only loves me for the snax. I was hoping for a more productive working relationship, perhaps a few team ups or something. Instead… just snax.
A professional warrior sailor, just 19 years old, takes the helm of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Like so many young warriors on this warship, she keeps us on course every day.
This warrior is a 22-year-old nuclear reactor mechanic, and she’s proud to provide continuous propulsion and power to her warship. She’s also glad to get a little sun on her face - been a minute!
Message to grandma: Miss you!!
Someone asked for more jet photos of the Fighting Swordsmen of VFA-32. Here’s a very recent snapshot with an afterburner takeoff.
A view from the front porch on the best damn ship in the Navy…🫡
First time EVER, I found a Sailor who was very much at home in the Captain’s chair. I gave him three cookies and a coin just so I could get the chair back!
Thanked his wife for the surprise and went back to moving aircraft around for flight ops.
Future Captain perhaps?
Surprise pop-in to Mighty IKE’s “USO Central” where people can chill and play games during their limited downtime. I guarantee you’ve never seen anything like this on a warship!
@The_USO
I’m in the mood to talk about leadership failures again…

: Half the time I get frustrated about something, I realize I never set the expectations. Turns out people can’t read my mind.
Unsuspecting Petty Officer rolls out of rack, told to report to bridge. Handed cookie and put in the captain’s chair.
Me: Your wife says it’s your anniversary. You call her?
Him: Uh, yessir.
Me: Good man.
Him: Tell her I love her and miss her.
Goes back to night jet maintenance.
Behold…IKE security forces. I tried to get them to do mean faces, but they declined. These warriors patrol at sea or in port every day. Just ordinary Americans doing extraordinary things…⚔️

Young man here just qualified as Officer of the Deck! His mom (retired Navy Captain) is going to be so proud, and it was her birthday last week. Btw, I confirmed — he called her on time.
Unsuspecting Petty Officer called to the bridge after working on jets all day. He is a big supporter of
@Kidz4aCause
& he is the conduit through which this org sends letters to deployed Sailors. A remarkable Sailor supporting a remarkable organization. (Says he doesn’t smile)
Unsuspecting Petty Officer gets off watch on the reactor and sent directly to the bridge. Hasn’t seen sunlight in days. Squinting, he says, “I’m not sure why I am here sir.“ Me: “Your mom and dad miss you!” Him: “Love you mom and dad.” Eats cookie.
Morale is the gateway to success. It starts with loving & valuing people, and requires giving people mission & purpose. Without this, the organization will fracture. Many of us have seen that.
This young warrior made a very difficult repair on a catapult and saved the day by bringing it back up just in time for use. Sailors like him make a HUGE difference in combat.
Unsuspecting Petty Officer called to the bridge and placed in Captain’s chair. Coin provided (someone ate the last cookie!).
Me: Your wife and girls want to see your smile.
His message: “I love you and miss you, and this is so embarrassing!”
He goes back to loading missiles.
This Warrior Sailor is an IT professional. He was called to the bridge after fixing a network issue. Don’t ask me to even try to explain.
Mustache is coming along nicely, am I right?
He told me he misses Grandma and Papa.
Provided a fresh cookie for his superb efforts!
While conducting ops in the Middle East, this Petty Officer was called to the bridge. Cookie given and placed in Captain’s chair. Just finished working on comm gear.
Him: This is jarring sir.
Me: Well, your sister, mom & dad miss you.
Him: “Hello”
A man of few words.
Unsuspecting Petty Officer called to the bridge at the request of his loving wife. Was busy working on nuclear reactor paperwork. Seemed dazed as he plopped in the Captain’s chair, but snatched a fresh cookie. Says, “Tell my wife I miss her.” Goes back to serving his country.
Unsuspecting Petty Officer sent to the bridge and told to sit in the Captain’s chair. Cookie placed in his hand, confusion blankets his face. Told that his mom is so damn proud of him and misses him. He says, “Love you Mom and I’m following in your footsteps.” Mom is a Navy vet!
Unsuspecting Sailor called to bridge after repairing a glitch in a navigation console. Looks around confused. Put in Captain’s chair & handed a warm cookie.
Me: Mom says she misses you.
Him: Tell her I love her.
Goes back to work serving his country, spare cookies in hand. 🇺🇸
Surprise pop-in on the flight deck between recoveries…and I bump into the Navy’s version of a battlefield reenlistment. Sailor thanked his late grandfather for bringing his family to the US from Haiti and changing his life.
This is America and

.
We think of junior Sailors as super young, but the other day I re-enlisted an E-5 who signed up to fight for his country at the age of 39. He’s now older than his Captain.
Is that not super motivating?
@USNavy
💪🏼
Unsuspecting Petty Officer called to bridge after fixing computer accounts. She works IT. Given cookie and placed in the Captain’s chair.
Me: Mom says she loves you.
Her: Thanks mom. The cookie was the best part of my day, but this chair is terrifying!
Unsuspecting Petty Officer told to report to the bridge while working on a weapons elevator. Put in Captain’s chair, given cookie.
Me: Do you know why you’re here?
Him: No idea sir.
Me: Your grandmother loves you & wanted to see your face.
Him: Oh man… tell Granny I love her.
The “spot” award challenge: Give out a medal on the same day as the deserving event. Wicked impactful, emotional. Note the chicken scratch certificate — real paperwork catches up later…
Btw, this fine Sailor is an AG — Aerographer’s Mate. They do weather.
Every American Aircraft Carrier has a civilian “Fun Boss” who promotes morale-enhancing activities for Sailors during their limited downtime at sea. Naturally, IKE has the best damn Fun Boss in the Navy!!
Her message back to her mom: “Mami, thanks for calling me out!”
Unsuspecting Petty Officer ordered to the bridge while working on a major welding job.
Her thoughts: What the [bleep] did I do wrong?
Me: Your husband’s fault.
Her response to him: “I love you and wish you were here with me.”
Then she took a bite of the cookie.
Unsuspecting Petty Officer requested to the bridge courtesy of his family back home. His wife says, “The girls miss him.”
He just spent the night leading other Masters-at-Arms and enforcing good order and discipline for the Captain. He is very proud to serve his country!
Unsuspecting Petty Officer sent to see the captain on the bridge. Was working on intel “stuff.” Snatched a free cookie.
Fiancée: I really miss him and want to see his face.
Him: I love you sweet girl!
Goes back to serving his country.
This fine Petty Officer just came off duty after tracking multiple ships to improve situational awareness. He is also an underwater acoustics expert. We only have a few.
His wife wanted him to have a cookie and to see his smile.
His message: “Love you with all my heart.”
Everyday I have the honor of recognizing the “Warrior of the Day.” These exceptional Sailors are nominated by their departments for living the “Way of the Warrior Sailor.”
They get to drive the ship and receive a box of cookies.

Unsuspecting electrician called to bridge after grooming a generator. Confused, he is handed a cookie and placed in the chair.
Mom/Dad/Bros: “We want a pic!”
His message: “Working hard, doing great things.”
Goes back to protecting freedom and doing great things.
Unsuspecting Petty Officer called to the bridge. She assumed she was in trouble until handed a cookie and placed in the Captain’s chair. 🍪
Message to family: “I love you and always thinking of you.”
Returned to work to do wiring repairs on fighter jets (electrician!). ⚓️⚡️
Remember that show Dirty Jobs or whatever. Yeah this would be one. This is what humans have to do for catapult inspections. We also put people inside those tubes.
If you’re one of the few selected for “IKE Warrior of the Day,” you get the privilege of taking the helm and moving around 4.5 acres of sovereign US territory.
This young lady works on catapults and was chosen among 200 others b/c she is amazing.

: Not taking the time to recognize the hard work of unsung heroes. You know what I’m talking about — those that kick ass daily but do it completely under the radar. You have to seek them out.
Had lunch with some wicked-smaht nuclear reactor warriors. They were the “most improved” on their recent written exams. Despite everything going on, they studied during their limited free time to simply do well on the test. No medals, no monetary reward, just because they cared.
Here are some of my wicked-smaht reactor warriors after lunch together today. Out of 450+ nuclear-trained professionals, they are my top exam scorers this month. Combat or not, they never EVER stop training.

Unsuspecting helicopter aircrewman called to bridge on request of his girlfriend who says he hates pics, but loves cookies.
Him: Ugh.
He consumed two cookies, made it to his brief on time, and ended up patrolling the sea for contacts.
Unsuspecting airman brought to bridge on request of mom. He was prepping fire bottles for flight ops, as it is his duty. Cookies ran out, so he got the Ike Warrior coin.
Message to mom: Thank you for supporting me all the way!
Procedes to his rack (he works nights).
This young warrior grilled 100s of cheese steaks today for the crew, causing lots of smiles. Her mom is so proud of her, as am I. I asked what her message to mom was and she said, “Thumbs up emoji.” 👍🏻🫡
Unsuspecting Petty Officer called to the bridge and placed in the Captain’s chair. Cookie offered. Cookie consumed.
To his wife: “I love you with all my heart.”
Returns to hangar bay to reposition aircraft prior to operations.
Says: “This is the way,” as he departs.
Just qualified two new reactor operators. These young men crushed their board and will be the ones physically operating the controls of two powerful nuclear reactors. I love the fact that the
@USNavy
does this!
Unsuspecting Petty Officer called to the bridge after doing maintenance on bomb trailers. Given the Captain’s chair + cookie.
Me: Your mom, dad and brother miss you.
Him to family: Doing great out here and getting the job done!
(He is in fact crushing it!)
Helicopter mechanic called to the bridge. He was already on to my scheme based on word of mouth!
Mom: “Dad, girls, nephew and I miss you and love you.”
Him: “Miss you guys and love you too!”
Returns below to replace a helicopter blade… in service to his country.
This young warrior is a nuclear reactor electrician and very proud of what she does for the ship. Her msg to her parents: “I’m okay and doing my very best every day.” Mom and Dad, you should be very proud! 🇺🇸
Captain gets weekly boat flight. Passes old man test airborne (ability to see large aircraft a couple miles away). Evaluates controllers and flight deck crew. Gives gas to fighters. Lands. Executes plan of the day.
While sauntering through the deck plates, I spot Captain Demo. I track him down so you all can see his leash retrieval skills. Naturally, he demands snax in return… Demo is our facility dog and his mission is to reduce a little stress. He’s doing a fine job of it!
Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment Officers (Shooters) signal a Super Hornet fighter jet to launch from the flight deck of the best damn ship in the Navy.

Allow me to present the “Cookie Boss” — the mastermind behind the cookies! Her mom wanted to see her in the chair b/c she does the daily baking for others. Her message: “Love you mom, give my brother a hug from me.” Apparently, he doesn’t like hugs.
Leadership failure

: Blaming everyone for the sins of the few. Some leaders prefer group punishment because it’s the easy button. And we forget that most people are doing the right thing every day. Don’t forget them!
Sailor knew the scam, but he proudly showed up to the bridge for his cookie after coordinating cleaning efforts on the mess decks!
He discussed how much he loves his wife and 2-yr old son. And how hard it is to be away from them.
Still, morale is high and he is proud to serve!
Two unsuspecting Airmen called to bridge to meet the captain. Cookie offered. Their C-2 squadron beach det wanted to shock them from afar. It worked.
Message to beach: “Enjoying the boat!”
Sent back to their Plane Captain duties with a challenge coin (for their troubles).
Unsuspecting IT warrior is brought to bridge after doing network maintenance to keep up assured communications. His pals were behind this ploy…
Message to pals: “Love ya!”
Rapidly consumes cookie and resumes his work defending freedom.
One of my favorite jobs is international diplomacy. I had the opportunity to chat with the captain of the warship HDMS Iver Huitfeldt
@lund_sunelund
from Denmark. He has a similar style and digs the

too. Brothers of the sea!
