(4/4) IMHO the experience of riding a powered hire bike at 15mph is very different to the experience of cycling; trips on e-bikes shouldn’t be lauded as a metric of "active travel” when most of the journeys they’re used for don’t even require the rider to break a sweat!

(3/4) Whether you like them or loathe them, dockless hire bikes have become a de facto mode of public transport - one which didn't exist at scale in 2019, making any comparisons between 2024 data and pre-COVID cycle counts completely meaningless.

(2/4) The explosion of dockless hire bikes isn't due to any change in attitudes toward cycling that @TfL could take credit for. It's fuelled by 100s of millions of dollars in private equity loans & debt financing, and enabled with the self-interested support of local authorities.

Will Norman is claiming that his figures show a cycling boom in London, but in reality they simply reflect the growth of micromobility, and of dockless hire bikes in particular. Don't just take my word for it....(1/4)
💥London’s cycling boom continues💥 📈New data shows bike journeys in the capital are up 26% since 2019 to 1.33m every day 🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🥳💚💚 We’ll keep work with boroughs to make more streets safer and enable even more Londoners to get around on 2 (or 3) wheels 🚲🙂🚲

So. @LBHF are turning Rivercourt Road in Hammersmith (off the A4 that leads to King Street that crosses the cycle lane) into a private road because: 1) Cars from outside the area use it 2) 9 residents live on the street It couldn’t possibly be because: 1) The @LBofHounslow

Closing Rivercourt Road will impact parents & staff from 3 nearby schools, and hundreds of others from outside the borough who use the facilities at the Latymer sports centre for holiday camps etc. Do their needs matter less than a cycleway that most local residents don't want?

@TfL @LBHF @andyslaughtermp @StephenCowan The London Cycling Campaign wanted to close the junctions at Weltje Rd & Rivercourt Rd when #Cycleway9 was being planned, because they know it is the only way to make the dangerous bi-directional design work. @TfL advised against it as they know what the impact on traffic will be

@TfL @LBHF If you're closing the road because of the increased risk to cyclists, perhaps you should be looking at the design of #Cycleway9 instead? There were only 2 collisions at Weltje Road & Rivercourt Road in the three years before it was built - but 23 collisions in 3 years since!

(8/8) So the outcome of this plan will be that residents in #Chiswick and along the A4 will get diverted traffic, more congestion and slower bus journeys - all because @LBHF and @TfL don't want to admit that building #Cycleway9 along King Street was a dangerous error.

(7/8) #Chiswick Lane is also on a key bus route through West London (the 190), so creating more congestion here simply worsens the existing problems with bus speeds in London (and in @LBofHounslow specifically!) https://t.co/bi0BbL309D
Taking a bus in London? It might be quicker to walk The mayor has been urged to review cycle lane and low-traffic policies after a watchdog revealed that average bus speeds had fallen as low as 6.6mph

(6/8) However closing off Rivercourt Road to anyone but residents will simply divert westbound traffic on the A4 to #Chiswick Lane - a junction which already jams up regularly at peak hours thanks to the impact of #Cycleway9 on traffic flow along #Chiswick High Road.

(5/8) In 2023 @TfL attempted to reduce the number of collisions at these 2 junctions by installing raised tables and building out the pavement, but it didnt work - 6 of the 9 collisions at Weltje Road & Rivercourt Road in 2023 occurred AFTER the junction works had been completed.

(4/8) Their calls to close off access to the A4 at these junctions have had plenty of amplification from the most vocal minority in #Chiswick….

(3/8) The cycling lobby groups have been campaigning to close the Rivercourt Road junction ever since #Cycleway9 was installed - presumably because it’s more convenient for them than admitting that the bidirectional design was flawed from the outset.

(2/8) In reality, it’s a desperate measure to address the huge increase in cycle collisions which has occurred since the bi-directional #Cycleway9 was installed across 2 junctions providing access to & from the A4.

One individual cyclist making both an outbound & return journey on #Cycleway9 will be counted as two bikes. One cycle courier making multiple journeys to pick up and deliver food will be counted again & again every time their bike crosses the count point.

Meanwhile on #Cycleway9 ...
It’s great to see the high demand for active travel in west London, and I welcome proposals to extend Cycleway 9 between Brentford and Syon Park. If you live locally, I encourage you to share your views on how we can make walking & cycling safer and more accessible to everyone.
