Proof that we don't need to plant trees to get woodland in Kent. Formerly pasture, now rich wildlife habitat. Many species of native tree+more diverse structure than the gloomy rows of plastic tubes still favoured by some. Nightingale, Turtle Dove and Grizzled Skipper all here.

It's nice to see some light shining on these utterly anachronistic bodies, I hope that the new government comes up with a new approach which balances interests more appropriately than these old boys clubs do. I've always meant to ask @AmiesPhilip what a good approach might be.

1. You might not have heard of it, but the system supposed to protect us in England and Wales from #floods is an absolute disgrace: a network of old boys' clubs completely unaccountable to the public. No wonder it fails so badly. My column + thread.

I get lots of Oak Bush-crickets in the garden where they seem particularly fond of sugar I put out for moths, but today a Southern Oak Bush-cricket came in the house. I think the first I've seen here. Note the absence of wings.
