There’s a hidden threat beneath Antarctica’s ice sheet & it could add over 2m to global sea levels by 2300. New research shows subglacial meltwater plays a far bigger role in ice loss than previously thought & it urgently needs considering in modelling:

A new study found parts of Antartica could pass a tipping point for mass ice sheet losses as soon as 2050 – pushing sea levels 2 metres higher by 2300 than currently predicted.

Great to see our new paper in @NatureComms featured by 60 news outlets following an interview with @AAPNewswire! We reveal hidden water under Antarctica that could accelerate ice loss and sea-level rise 🌍❄

The rate of ice melting in Antarctica could be underestimated by current scientific models, according to research examining the role of subglacial water flows.

There's a hidden force beneath Antarctica that could seriously amplify ice loss: meltwater under the ice sheet. No background in glaciology or climate science needed—if you’re interested in the future of our coasts, cities, or planet, this one's for you.

📣 Our new paper is out in @NatureComms ! Subglacial water—often overlooked—can change sea-level rise projections by up to a factor of three. Big implications for how we model Antarctica. 🔗

Big thanks to the organizing committee! 🙌 I've been inspired by the insightful talks and discussions over the past two days. Australia's data infrastructures are robust, but integrating data from five spheres poses challenges. We must rally our efforts, especially from ECRs.💪
Honored to join as a panelist representing the #Cryosphere at #IntegratedEarth2023, a symposium aiming to integrate Earth systems expertise and data. Australia's Cryosphere community may be small, but it's pivotal. Urgently, we must connect with other spheres to bridge gaps. 🌍❄️

"We urgently need better projections of future sea-level rise that will enable us to plan for and adapt to widespread and costly coastal impacts in Australia and around the world." With immense enthusiasm and excitement, I'm ready to embrace my new journey in #Antarctic Science.
Thrilled and deeply honored to be awarded the prestigious DECRA fellowship! Grateful beyond words for the unwavering support from @UTAS_ and my incredible colleagues from @Ant_Partnership @AntarcticSciAus @IMASUTAS . #DECRA #DE24

I used to worry that polar bears might go extinct in my lifetime, but now I'm starting to worry that my favorite emperor penguins might also face extinction in my lifetime. 💔💔💔
“The rate at which their environment is changing is faster than the rate at which they can adapt…we are likely to witness the demise of an extraordinary species that has graced Earth for millions of years.” — Dr Barbara Wienecke, emperor penguin expert https://t.co/2q5voMpfgY

1.5 ℃ warmer than the 1850-1900 average. It's already happened. 😔
The latest #C3S climate bulletin confirmed that the global surface air temperature for July 2023 was the highest on record for any month in the #ERA5 dataset. 🌡️ 1.5°C warmer than the 1850-1900 average, the limit established by the #ParisAgreement. ▶️ https://t.co/t626DVI79P

Heatwaves, record low sea ice, ice shelf collapse and species crashes are threatening the globally important #Antarctic environment Only rapid emissions reductions can prevent Antarctic extreme events from becoming more frequent and intense in future https://t.co/ASPOAv3uj2
