And the challenge now will be ensuring real enforcement and compliance with this policy, and LASD fully and proactively investigating and eradicating deputy gangs.

It is not clear whether LASD has to cooperate with the Civilians Oversight Commission’s own investigations into deputy gangs. The fact that the Office of Inspector General and the Civilian Oversight Commission were shut out of this process is deeply problematic.

ALADS, the LASD police assoc., has abused & manipulated the process to undermine & delay this policy.This is police associations do. They manipulate labor law to shield abuses & violations against the public—including some of the most egregious perpetrated by deputy gang members.

This new LASD policy on deputy gangs should have been adopted long ago, instead of LASD spending years violating CA law. As it’s written, it is unclear whether LASD will take any proactive steps to uproot deputy gangs within the department. #LASDgangs .
