Media literacy requires doing the work. Most people don't calibrate their frame of reference by seeking out, watching, and actively engaging with bad movies. It's easy to say a good movie is bad when you've never even seen the bottom 90 percent, let alone the bottom 1 percent!.
It emboldened a wave of people that think nitpicking films is always valid criticism. So now you have folks watching The Dark Knight or Lord of the Rings and saying they are bad films because they caught a "plot hole" or because they saw a discrepancy in a costume or set piece.
