Meanwhile, the clean energy developers are rowing in support of Miliband. EDF, SSE, the RenewableUK lobby group all supportive. Miliband's clean power 2030 target is meant to lower bills. There is a lot of political capital now staked on proving Greg Jackson wrong.

Miliband says no to zonal pricing. It's a complex issue. But one simple political takeaway:. Greg Jackson — Octopus boss, probably the most prominent biz cheerleader for Ed Miliband's clean energy mission — now says Miliband is keeping bills high + building unnecessary pylons ⚔️

Interestingly, for the first time today the Cabinet Office included a background note in their response that the contract was signed under the previous government. We've reported that fact before — but it's the first glimmer of embarrassment / contrition I've seen from government.

Government's new National Security Strategy very stark on how Russia and other potential enemies view UK energy supply as a vulnerability in the event of war.

Strategic Defence Review says the Navy "must be prepared to deter" Nord Stream-style attacks on Britain's undersea gas pipelines. Emphasis on work with private operators, but Navy now needs to play "a new leading and coordinating role" in securing critical undersea infrastructure.

Gas is still the lifeblood of Britain. But we have dwindling domestic supplies + are dependent on imports. So the vital arteries — undersea pipelines — are outside our borders, very hard to protect. It's a profound strategic vulnerability — and 🇷🇺 knows it.

Expectation is strategic defence review next week will say something on this. In the long-term, there's only one way out of the bind. Reduce our dependence on gas.
