When embracing the "science of reading" ensure that science includes phonics & decoding AND ALSO the science of comprehension, vocabulary, fluency & self-regulation. Keep top of mind, learners differ. We teach readers, not just reading. @LiteracyTalk @DrMaryHoward #cpchat #edchat

On conferring- When we ask about the book, we’re turning the conference into a worksheet 🚫 When we ask about the reader & their process we recognize the work that they are doing & make it transferable ✅ @drgravityg @ReneeDHouser #TCRWP #SaturdayReunion #RSDreading

Listening to episode 13 of the #InspireLiteracy podcast about the big ideas around conferring! “It’s not enough to set kids up with great books and send them off to read.” Great reminders about both reading & writing conferences! #FriscoIC @allenelem #FISDliteracy #TCWRP

@ericareardon & @CharaRodrigues1 are helping me think 💭 deeply about reading communities on this final Mon. morning walk in August. With the pandemic 😷 continuing to rage, holding onto our favorite reading memories feels comforting. Literacy is social. https://t.co/f1LSYQZOk5

My podcast companions during a morning walk today are @ericareardon & @CharaRodrigues1. They opened with quotes from Jim Trelease & @lester_laminack—two giants in the field of literacy and outspoken advocates for reading aloud. #KellerLiteracy https://t.co/rirmhqvWfQ

My advice on conferring. Just start doing it. Don’t stress about choosing the perfect teaching point or having the most beautiful toolkit. The more you do it, the better you become. Worst case scenario: You get to chat with one of readers, just you & them.

To support developing phonological awareness, @RebeccaCronin2 suggests planning post-its with the progression of skills to use after a read-aloud. Would be fun to do at PLCs! An example of things to do with Ss after reading Mrs. McNosh Hangs Up the Wash: #tcrwp
