📢 Archive advice needed!! Does the NYU Special Collections currently offer a research fellowship? I know they have in the past, but it’s unclear to me if they still do/plan to for the upcoming year.

It's surprising and worrying that the University of Nebraska is shutting down its department of statistics Usually we think of this happening to marginal departments, but one would think that a good state university should have statistics? 1/

Black Rice is a must read, 10/10. This book gave me a new reverence for west African rice cultivation & foodways.

The memorial/the mill — I visited Honea Path yesterday, to see the marker to the strikers killed at Chiquola Mill in 1934 and the mill’s ruins.

Rosa Luxemburg writing from prison to the Kautskys after the 1905 Russian revolution: "Taken as a whole, the situation is serious, but after all, we are living in agitated times where 'whatever exists deserves to perish.' So, be of good cheer and thumb your noses at everything."

Eight prisons in VA currently have no AC. That means there's nothing but the oppressive heat. "We go to sleep in sweat and wake up in sweat twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, with no respite until the summertime heat departs for the fall season."

It is a profoundly bleak state of affairs when South Carolina's leading candidates for governor see the daily horrors of Florida's immigrant detention camp and say, "We need to copy that."
