#HiringFreeze across all 10 UC campuses. Devastating doesn’t begin to cover it. Make no mistake, the ripple effects will be felt far outside of academia. This is bad for healthcare, statewide revenue, upward mobility etc etc etc.
NEW: The University of California is freezing all hires and implementing additional cuts -- in travel, maintenance and other areas -- in response to uncertainty over the the future of federal funding during the Trump administration:

As a person who directly benefitted from many of the programs being dismantled (F31 diversity, diverse postdoc seminar series, cluster hire, etc), it hits so hard every time I see one of these programs go away. I am gutted. We are going to lose so many exceptional scientists.

✌️🏼 In pregnancy, sleep challenges can be considered normal (even when they're not)! Sleep problems may have been considered an inherent part of pregnancy experience, weakening the credibility of the sleep disparities message.

👆🏼We drew attention to disparities in the prevalence rates of poor sleep among Latinx/Black people. It's possible that focusing on disparities in the *consequences* of poor sleep may have motivated more screening.

Overall, the disparities message resulted in less screening and the disparities vs. standard message did not impact participants differently depending on their race/ethnicity. While unexpected, we think the disparities message may have flopped in part b/c...

We randomized pregnant people to receive a study recruitment ad highlighting ethnic/racial disparities in sleep quality, or an identical message without a mention of disparities. Then we looked @ which message resulted in more screening overall & by participant race/ethnicity.

Randomized controlled trials notoriously under-enroll non-white participants. In this article, we tested whether recruitment messaging could be leveraged to increase the diversity of pregnant people screening into a study for prenatal insomnia.

Postbacs have few mechanisms for obtaining travel funds & still we prioritize an applicant's conference presentations during grad admission. Efforts like this virtual SIG conference are one way to increase equity for our trainees.

Past mentees had a moment last week! One admitted to her top choice clinical psych PhD program. The other got their honor's thesis accepted to a peer reviewed journal. I've had an urge to call them "rockstars" which is the only part of this situation I'm not proud of.
