Something that gets overlooked a lot with this is that the original version is literally FILLED with memes. Hoyoverse's roots are in internet culture and anime fandom. So it only makes sense to translate internet speak with internet speak.
Can hoyoverse please stop doing this? It sucks how much of a great example HSR is when it comes to how awful localization brainrot is. Because translators are quite capable at translating complex long winded dialogues.
But they feel need to insert this shit and awful at it.

Kentaro Miura Talks New Manga ‘Duranki,’ Future of ‘Berserk’ and More in New Interview
A lot of those who criticise anime for overwork and underpaying artists neglect that US cartoons are largely built on the backs of underpaid and overworked artists in the Philippines, Taiwan and South Korea.
The storyboards drawn in the US aren't the end of the process.
Attack on Titan is the anime that defines the decade. In 2013, it introduced us to an entirely new form of action. But after many highs and lows, the show has changed a lot by 2021.
Here's my video on 8 years of Attack on Titan animation!
In a year with some of the most creative and interesting 2D animation across the globe, I really would've expected I Lost My Body, Promare, Klaus, or Weathering With You to be nominated instead of The Lion King's quest to pretend not to be animated.

I hate stories like this that don't add context. Tokyo Mirage Sessions sold out. They didn't ship enough copies because their projections were too low.
It often goes unmentioned, but Youtube thumbnails are all too commonly used to steal fanart and use it to promote videos.
And many channels can't be pressured to stop because YT offers no way of protecting artists.
Neil, Ken Levine, and Kojima all make grand claims like this, but if I was to point to one person who /actually/ redefined modern gaming, it'd be the one guy who really missed Harvest Moon games and inadvertantly revitalized an entire genre and introduced new people to games.
I entirely believe HSR is one of the most difficult games out there to translate. To properly create an English version not only requires understanding Chinese pop culture and cultural texts, but also is incredibly dense and complex.
Beyond the transphobia, there's reason to just not believe any statement Netflix makes again. Chapelle's standups never broke even, despite Netflix's insistence that they are their most watched and "stickiest" standup specials.
They must be furious this data leaked.
This is the big one.
Mismanagement, miscommunication, and misspending. Crunchyroll Originals have been a disaster.
In 2018, Crunchyroll Studios Tokyo was founded. In 2020, it was closed.

Translators are anime’s essential workers who make it possible for us to love this medium.
Yet, they’re consistently devalued, resulting in low pay while frequently having to overwork.
Here’s my latest video:
I haven't even read Chainsaw Man, but just from his one-shots, I think Tatsuki Fujimoto is my favourite manga author.
"Goodbye, Eri" was a masterpiece.
I can only imagine how freaking difficult the Penacony dialogue is. The English team made a mistake where they translated an insult into its English equivalent, only to realize that the specific wording of the Chinese insult would be relevant in the next patch. It's a nightmare.
Worth saying: Crunchyroll's translators over the last decade are absolutely responsible for making that company worth over 1 billion dollars.
If only they were paid to reflect this fact.
This month marks the 15th anniversary of Baccano!, Takahiro Omori's masterful adaptation of Ryohgo Narita's light novels.
Set in 1930s America, the show follows an eccentric cast of characters across three years of supernatural events simultaneously.
And the biggest thing is that it's never going to end! So lines that seem like they properly adapt the nuance of the Chinese original may end up getting proven wrong years later when it turns out the specific Chinese wording had a double-meaning.
People are complaining about the NEO TWEWY localisation and how the localisation team are ruining the work of the team at Square Enix Tokyo.
We've received some intel and found the headquarters of these dastardly localisers. They're at Square Enix Tokyo.
MAPPA has changed a lot over the past 10 years. Established for the founder's passion projects, the studio has instead become an internationally renowned hit-maker.
But what fans often aren't privy to is the cost.
Here's my latest video.
Mushoku Tensei is an extraordinary show with an extraordinary production and incredible animation.
Instead of letting whoever's available adapt it, they spent years building a studio and assembling a star team to create the best anime possible.

Two years ago, Orange released Land of the Lustrous, a 3D anime with all the appeal of 2D works.
Today, they return with BEASTARS, a brand new artistic and technical challenge for the team.
Here's my video breaking down the creation of this unique show:
Going from being on the Dragon Quest team and being the main producer of NieR to "Yosuke Saito, Director, Square Enix Blockchain Entertainment Division" is the most pathetic career move.
Not censored at all! The faces aren't animated in the show at all, so they just put a bright white light over the kiss because they couldn't animate it.
So.... Ex-Arm a new anime adaption based on a manga with the same name censored the same sex kiss scene between two girls but in the original manga there was no censored scene?
@Crunchyroll
need to come out with an explaining asap since they are crunchyroll originals
Japan Studio was a special place. Instead of chasing profits, these developer's goal was just to make Playstation look good.
But now that it's gone, I want to reflect on the incredible art of Gravity Rush and the enormous work of one passionate animator.
Japans new Prime Minister is a big fan of Demon Slayer (especially akaza) and promised to boost the income for people working in the Anime and Manga industry
There's a Kickstarter for a "Free Anime Streaming Service" that got super popular overnight, but the marketing for it is misleading at best.
The screenshots show popular anime like Attack on Titan, Sword Art Online and FMA, but there's no way they can even touch those licenses.
Honestly, they should develop the next Final Fantasy with the Switch 2 in mind. The graphical complexity of PS5 games is a poor tradeoff for 7 year production cycles.
A new FF that looks just as good as FFVIIR is more than enough.
Nikkei is reporting that Nintendo's stock has risen 4 days in a row due to Square's change in strategy.
While Square was one of the biggest supporters of Switch, investors are aligned with putting AAA Square games on Nintendo platforms.

Toshihiro Nagoshi entirely credits the success of the Yakuza series in the West to the localisation team and strongly believes that an interpretative approach captures his vision better than literal translations.

EX-ARM isn't your regular badly animated show. In fact, nobody on the staff knew how to make anime to begin with!
Here's my video breaking down the creation of the worst anime of all time.
Modern anime isn't just about cool character designs and detailed backgrounds. It's also about the many new ways in which all of these pieces have been assembled together.
Here is my latest video: The Recipe for Modern Anime
There's a lot of talk about animators no longer wanting to work with MAPPA based on some recent tweets, but it's worth mentioning that this has been a wide issue.
Anime overproduction has caused many people to leave the industry entirely, exacerbating the current issues.
The amount of anime industry misconceptions built out of a single-minded disdain for streaming companies is absolutely exhausting.
A lot of misconceptions arise from old ideas and a lack of information, but there's still so many that are the basis of willful ignorance.
I can't stop thinking about Trigun Stampede. If this 3D animation doesn't convince you that this is a viable way of creating anime, I don't know what will.
@FruitFrakker
1000% People so often compare translated lines to Google Translate's output, which is only ever going to give you the wording while ignoring the context, character, and intent. It's why games where the loc team can communicate with the original writers often end up looser.
People are seriously using Twitch to just stream whole TV shows? For YouTube, I've got to cut every anime clip down to 10 seconds or less, or I get an immediate copyright strike.
Just think it's important that people know this. Outside of Kazuyoshi Yaginuma being a literal holocaust denier and anti-semite, a lot of this isn't even his own words. And is literally just parroting what he was told by genuine Twitter neo-nazis.
These struggles are common across the industry (although exacerbated at MAPPA) and it's decades of exhaustion and underpay coming to a fever pitch.
The anime industry shouldn't be just for people willing to overwork, even if that is how it's always been.
I generally have higher praise for CG anime than most people, but this is incorrect. CG is used as a location reference and sometimes as a way of designing a shot with a moving camera, but the number isn't 90%, even for studios like Ufotable who use this pipeline more than most.
The company decided to pin the data leak on a black trans person who was organising an employee walkout. The company says that the firing is in the name of "transparency", which is beyond ironic.
Freelance animators: Stop telling leak accounts details about upcoming anime.
Instead lie to them and say that every single upcoming anime will be made by MAPPA.
I'll admit, it is weird to me to see so many complaints about the animation in My Hero Academia's 5th season when so many other shows are going through total production collapse.
NEW VID:
There's been a lot of talk over how Chainsaw Man should and shouldn't be adapted.
Does realism fit with Fujimoto's world? Is Ryu Nakayama the right man for the job? Is this an adaptation worthy of the name?
The answers: Yes, yes, and absolutely.

Apart from the sheer audacity of creating a company purely for the purpose of releasing inaccurate manga translations, I'm almost more insulted by the fact that they gave it the same name as one of the most exciting anime studios today.
A Manga AI Localization Start-Up Company named Orange Inc. has raised around 19 million US dollars to translate up to 500 new manga volumes PER MONTH into english and launch their own e-book store 'emaqi' in the USA in Summer 2024!
Their goal is to fight piracy and increase the…
"Anime is more profitable and popular than ever before, which is why we're taking all of Japan's greatest anime directors and getting them to make anime versions of Western live-action films"
I may have gone into Kaiju No.8 for the wrong reasons. Got really excited for a show about a kaiju cleanup crew and was massively disappointed it turned out to be about fighting monsters.
"We wouldn't be here without the talent behind the anime we love"
Then pay and credit them. Pay your translators an industry-standard wage and remove the non-disparagement agreement from your contracts.
Seen a couple of people disappointed that Star Wars: Visions is just short films and not full series, but honestly: Thank fuck they're short films.
These creators and studios already have a bunch of stuff lined up for the future. These shorts are at least practical to fit in.
Deca-Dence is literally about Western capitalism
Kim and I joke about it being about the "Decadence of western society" (since that's what showed up when I Twitter searched the title), but it literally is.

Pokemon Black and White were the magnum opus of Game Freak's years as pixel artists, delivering a compelling blend of 2D characters in a 3D Unova.

SSSS.Dynazenon and Gridman are the most interesting shows Studio Trigger has created.
Inventive direction, a deep character narrative, and subtle and bombastic animation contrasting each other.
It's a masterpiece.
Here is my spotlight on Studio Trigger:
Before supporting Trigger on Patreon, please consider the fact that this is a anime studio with a parent company, undying support from Aniplex and multiple game deals.
Until the Trigger Patreon makes it clear that they're specifically highlighting and paying underpaid staff: 👎

Since I've now left it behind and don't need to fear doxxing, I can say that I spent the last 4 years living a couple minutes walk from both Ghibli and Miyazaki's studio and we walked past him smoking on his balcony one night while I loudly complained about a seasonal anime.
Last year, Funimation acquired Crunchyroll for over a BILLION dollars.
Yet despite being a large part of creating that value, translators under Sony's watch have been overworked and underpaid.
The merger was not a win for workers.
Here's my new video:
I feel like the process of adaptation is constantly misunderstood among anime fans. The idea isn't about accuracy. The only reason anime ends up that way is due to too much oversight from executives and editors.
These stories should change, but instead we get boring adaptations.
They seem to be under the impression that anime was made for them, when most of it was actually made for Japanese people familiar with Japanese culture.
If a series is successful overseas that’s viewed as a happy bonus, but it’s almost never Japanese creators’ priority.
Here's my new article for ANN on the overproduction of anime, streaming, and how the obsession with "content" is driving artists around the world to burnout.
Parrot Analytics' Alejandro Rojas says that anime consumption has doubled since 2017, and that there's still room to create more anime titles to meet the growing demand. The problem is that human beings have to actually create all of this content.
In 2012, the stars aligned to bring us an unbelievably ambitious show that changed world animation forever.
This is the story of overwork, trust, and incredible animation.

Maybe not. But check out the pilot episode of Anime Mythbusters for a crash cause in how 2D anime might use 3D footage as a reference to create ambitious scenes!

The idea that people think there weren't memes about popular manga in Honkai: Star Rail makes me think not enough people really understand who these Hoyoverse writers are.
The replies of these are just a bunch of well-animated shows. Whether people realise it or not, animation is a massive part of how the storytelling works.
