4/5 At a time of growing global instability, Canadians deserve leadership that confronts these threats head-on, rather than engage in tokenism. The absence of a strong government response fuels public distrust and leaves vulnerable communities, especially expatriates, at risk.

2/5 Transnational repression is not limited to a single authoritarian country. Foreign regimes—including China, Russia, and Iran—are harassing dissidents, intimidating journalists, infiltrating institutions, and working to undermine Canadian 🇨🇦 democracy.

CSIS warns that the Iranian regime poses a serious threat to Canadians who dare to criticize its repressive tactics and global sponsorship of terrorism. For years, the regime has pursued dissidents and critics abroad, enlisting local criminal networks to extort, intimidate, and.

At a time of heightened concern over immigration policy – and following electoral promises to review immigration numbers and pathways – delaying the release of immigration data for months only deepens public distrust. Reviewing how information is shared must never mean keeping.

UPDATE: IRCC finally responded to my request for comment to this story — they haven’t updated Canada’s immigration data since March because they’re “updating how we share immigration data with Canadians”

Belgium revoking refugee status for a Samidoun leader is a step toward closing gaps that extremists exploit. Canada 🇨🇦 must take action against groups supporting terrorism under the guise of activism.

Our empathy should be reserved for terror victims, not terrorists who murder civilians. We must stand with the real victims, not those who threaten global security.

Canada 🇨🇦 must take firm action to stop the CCP and its proxies from targeting democracy activists within our borders. Protecting our democracy means standing up to foreign intimidation.

Pleased to see allies unite to denounce Iran's global threat. We now need to see words matched with meaningful global measures. As Canadians 🇨🇦, we're not immune from this danger - as seen in the recent Iranian assassination plot targeting Irwin Cotler.

Some very key points in this piece by @sarkonakj. 3 years to order a criminal deported. 16 years to actually remove them. Unacceptable. We need comprehensive immigration reform - and real political resolve - to protect Canadians.

8/8.These are just a few among many challenges and potential solutions. But real change is only possible with political will. It's a dismal sign of resolve when Ottawa removed the "Wanted by CBSA" webpage in 2023. Put it back up—and do much more to protect Canadians.

7/8.Problem #5: In-person visa interviews have been almost entirely replaced with AI and automation. Solution #5: Canada should require in-person interviews for applicants & values-based screening. Just as 🇺🇸 requires interviews, 🇨🇦 should reintroduce the same standard for all.

Problem #4: From 2014-19 Canada admitted 3,300+ foreign nationals flagged for serious crimes. Solution #4: Prioritize overseas processing. When done abroad, onus is on applicant to prove admissibility. When in 🇨🇦, onus is on gov't to prove inadmissibility, making removal.

5/8.Problem #3: Our research shows that immigration/border officers typically lack law enforcement background, which makes investigative work difficult. Solution #3: While staffing up, enhance training and resources to track down those evading deportation.

3/8.Problem #1: Under the law, a foreign national can be detained for public safety IF an officer decides to pursue detention. As per this article, many just aren’t. Solution #1: Detention should be automatic for serious offences, including terrorism & national security.
