After a busy couple of years, our team of volunteers will be taking a break until autumn 2022. While there is still a lot of work to be done to develop a safer and more equitable restaurant industry, it is time for us to take a break to catch our breath and recharge. 🧵1/3

Every restaurant worker deserves to be paid fairly, provided with a safe workplace and treated with respect and dignity. It is going to take time but keep believing that it is possible and worth fighting for. 3/3

"Higher wages, regular & consistent shifts and a reasonable amount of hours for each shift, are just some of the measures the food service industry should consider mandating...You also want to craft policies that target issues like racism & sexism" https://t.co/BvgHB0mIrN

Businesses have been searching for ways to bring some of the 205,800 Canadians who left the industry over the last few years, but insiders say filling job openings is only half of the problem.

Promotions are great, but I think an important way to get people back into restaurants, bars and coffee shops in large numbers is to make them safe. By treating sars as the infectious-aerosol-borne disease that it is, we can do that. Governments can help.

We've been quiet about covid cases skyrocketing. It's not that it isn't important, we just feel defeated. The same issues keep arising and our governments have left us to fend for ourselves. 2 years in and we still need paid sick days, access to testing and improved ventilation

If you were asked to build a list of qualities an employer needs to be considered "one of the good ones", what would you include?

Have you tried negotiating a contract with your employer? With restaurants in high demand for labour, restaurant workers have more power to negotiate better work conditions. A few ideas: ▪️Pay rate ▪️Max weekly hours for those on salary ▪️Set days off ▪️Overtime rate

A reminder for restaurant workers to keep track of their hours worked and check their pay stubs to make sure they are being paid for all of their time working. 👉Some shady employers love to readjust start and end times to make sure that they are meeting their labour cost targets

Anyone else noticing customers have unattainably high expectations lately? We're still living in a pandemic. We're still short staffed. We're still having supply chain issues. We still have substandard work conditions.

"You are being served by someone, you do not have a servant. You do not have ownership over that person. Also, that person isn’t your friend who invites you over for a dinner party that you don’t have to pay for" - @arigular

“I don’t take breaks. I've always been told that's just the way things are in the service industry. Which is a bummer, because we’re entitled to it” - Ontario Server

"As soon as drinks start flowing, people don’t give a fuck (about wearing masks). Altogether, I’m not hung up about it, but I think it’s dumb; I try not to be too paranoid and keep my head on straight. I don’t know if this will get worse or better, but I see another wave coming”
“I know a lot of the nurses I work with don’t understand (this decision) and think it’s insane. I disagree with the government on this, but I’m not surprised. Their approach has been either panicked or concerned for the economy”:

What's the situation with restaurant workers wearing masks after they get dropped from being mandated? ▪️Will employers speak to their workers about what they want to do? ▪️Will employers allow workers to wear them by choice? ▪️Will employers bully them into not wearing them?

Governments are going to eliminate all public health measures even though covid isn't over. Couldn't they at least provide workers with an adequate number of permanent paid sick days? It's the least they could do.
