Their goals are to ensure the proper use of antimicrobials, improve patient care and patient outcomes, reduce the risks of AE, promote cost-effectiveness and reduce antimicrobial resistance. ASP works with many other departments to provide the best care for each patient. (3/4)

Did you know @ChildrensPhila was 1 of the first children’s hospitals to build & implement an ASP? Our expanding ASP team consists of 3 medical directors and 3 infectious diseases-trained clinical pharmacists. And as always, we couldn’t do it without our awesome ID fellows! (2/4)

(7/7) 4False! We can all be antibiotic stewards! Something as small as obtaining a MRSA swab and stopping that vancomycin a day early makes all the difference to reduce antibiotic resistance and side effects. ASP is always here to help!

(6/7) 3True. Multiple recent randomized trials have established effective durations for common pediatric infections! Notably, CAP is one of them.

(5/7) 2False. If the patient can tolerate enteral medications and absorption,  bioavailability and penetration to the site of infection are not an issue, orals are a great option! When in doubt, ask your clinical pharmacist!

ASP fun facts (4/7) 1False. Although 10% of the U.S. population reports hypersensitivity to penicillin, less than 1% of the population has a true penicillin allergy. Most patients with penicillin allergies can safely receive commonly used cephalosporins.

With RSV, influenza and Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) on the rise, it can be difficult to decide when and what antibiotics to use. Rest assured, a macrolide is usually not needed in our pediatric patients aged 5 or less. Check out our tip for more information. (2/2)
