Good response from @ZiaYusufUK here, who could not have imagined the interview wld be so madly personal. Obvs the answer to “why do ppl want to come here?” is because “the UK is fantastic”. That doesn’t mean everyone gets in. 👇

Will Shabana Mahmood be able to get her tough immigration reforms through? The backlash has begun Labour MP Rachael Maskell tells me: 'The dehumanisation of people in desperation is the antithesis of what the Labour Party is about' Stella Creasy calls them 'peformatively cruel'

Nine Labour MPs are already out of the gates this morning publicly attacking Shabana Mahmood's asylum proposals - and at least one minister is reportedly on resignation watch 🍿 https://t.co/GfvzM9Xon8

A number of MPs have already broken ranks to blast the policy, which they believe is playing into Reform's hands.

Labour MP representing one of the beaches illegal migrants aim for almost every day condemns Mahmood’s reforms as wrong headed and too mean on illegal migrants. 4,000 majority.
The Prime Minister said in September that we are at a fork in the road. These asylum proposals suggest we have taken the wrong turning. The idea that recognised refugees need to be deported is wrong. We absolutely need immigration controls. And where those controls decide to

Time after time our Government panders to the Irish government The Legacy Bill is just the latest act. @Keir_Starmer seems to want to please Republicans more than our own servicemen and women veterans.
Significant and unusual intervention from a group of Paras here about the Government's disgraceful stitch-up with the Irish Republic that exposes our veterans (but not the terrorists) to the risk of prosecution. The Bill is due in Parliament on Tuesday

Good. This is a dangerous Bill, and it should be blocked. Peers in fresh push to block assisted dying bill https://t.co/RM07wRWPeK

This is absolutely critical. If a patient tells me they want to die, how would I know whether the appropriate response is suicide prevention or suicide assistance? What would this decision be based on - a hunch?
Lord Goodman (@PaulGoodmanCH) points out that psychiatrists are trained to help prevent suicide, not authorise it. Using the Mental Capacity Act to authorise assisted suicides would confuse the role of psychiatrists and even place them at criminal risk under this Bill.

A question - How can you spend three weeks telling MPs, you can't do XYZ because the markets think we are too in hoc to our backbenchers - and then do this? All the whips, advisors, external experts who have been faithfully disseminating this to MPs made to look like mugs.
Absolute bombshell report in the FT tonight that Reeves has effectively ripped up her entire Budget and abandoning plans to raise income tax. Means a lot of disparate, smaller measures now on the table. Just yesterday morning I was told they were desperate to avoid that.

@Fox_Claire Well said. And those bills had pre-legislative process consultation and development. This has had none

Fact check. I beg to differ, as someone who sat through all 947 amendments to bloody Online Safety Bill. And please don't mention 1249 amendments to Levelling Up Bill. Key pt: amending Assisted Dying Bill by trying to add crucial safeguards= literally a matter of life or death
NEW: 942 amendments have been laid down in the House of Lords ahead of the Assisted Dying Bill's committee stage in the chamber, which starts tomorrow. This is believed to be a record for a bill at committee stage. It's going to be an intense debate.
