The ActiveBrains trial shows that supervised exercise can have a positive impact on the cardiometabolic health in children with overweight/obesity, which was likely driven by improvements in body compositions, LDL and cardiorespiratory fitness.

We did not find any significant effects on mental health outcomes. Different hypotheses for this null effect are discussed in the manuscript. #MentalHealthMatters #ExerciseAndMind

Moreover, we observed that more children at risk of metabolic syndrome at baseline were not at risk after the exercise program in the exercise group compared with the control group. A similar trend was observed in children passing from poor fitness to fit status

Nearly 80% of the children in the exercise group reduced meaningfully their fat mass index assessed with DXA (>=0.2 effect size, cohen-d)!!! vs. 36% in the control group.

The exercise program had significant positive effects on cardiometabolic health. It reduced cardiometabolic risk scores, lowered LDL cholesterol, BMI, fat mass, and visceral adipose tissue while improving cardiorespiratory fitness. Promising results! #ExerciseBenefits

Indeed, only children who achieved a meaningful reduction in IMAAT at the end of the intervention improved hepatic steatosis

Interestingly, we found that abdominal muscle fat plays a relevant role over the improvement of hepatic steatosis after a multicomponent intervention (lifestyle behaviours + exercise) in children with overweight/obesity, independently of abdominal fat loss.

Thus, we explored whether the effect of a 22-week family-based lifestyle and psychoeducational intervention 😴🍏🫂 plus supervised exercise 🏃‍♀️🏋️‍♀️on hepatic fat is mediated by changes in intermuscular abdominal fat fraction in children with overweight/obesity.

In adults, the improvement of MAFLD depends on the reduction of myosteatosis. In children, this muscle-liver crosstalk was unknown.
