1/3 Look. “Bacon Numbers” is a set-piece assignment for CS students. Solutions are usually sought in an “if-then-else” language. Amazingly, a correct pure SQL solution fits in a single tweet. See 2/3. But it fails to finish on real data 🙁 3/3 fixes this.

@UHaul_Cares @UHaul_Cares 4/4 Then, when I typed my facts perfectly, it said that I’d failed too many times and told me to try later. I left it a couple of days and tried again. Same “failed too many times” error. What RUBBISH! Look:

@UHaul_Cares @UHaul_Cares 3/3 I tried 1415nnnnnnn ’cos this format usually works on such screens. But this needs eleven digits. I typed my number that way, and when I entered the last digit, the “1” country code vanished. Fair enough. I must’ve fumbled a few times, getting “Computer says no”.

@UHaul_Cares 2/2 I read it on “ on my macOS 14.6.1 laptop. When I clicked the link, it forced me to install an app. Sigh… When I’d done that, I tried to register. The stupid screen gave no hint about the phone number format. Sigh again….

@Photoshop 2/2 I get no error message but it takes me back to the same “Sign in required” screen. I tried resetting my password but I get the same behavior. I have a note of my licence key. But I don’t reach a screen where I can enter it.

Sad news. Another reminder that time and tide wait for no man.
Very sad news on the passing of one of my first Oracle Database heroes in Dave Ensor. He taught me much about both Oracle Databases and on how to present entertainingly on what can be a dry subject. RIP. 🥲 #DaveEnsor #Oracle.

Full disclosure: using PostgreSQL Version 11, « select 5 ! » gets 120—the right answer for "factorial(5)". But on the current PostgreSQL Version 11, the "select" gets a syntax error. So maybe my initial indignation was fair, after all.
Look—in PostgreSQL & therefore in YugabyteDB's YSQL:. select. (select (1 != 2)::text) as "what I intended",. (select (1 ! = 2)::text) as "fat-fingered typo",. (select (1 !)::text) as "factorial of one";. I s'pose that I shouldn't feel too indignant….

Thx @pdevisser. Appreciated your ætherial participation in my talk. You asked me and partner-in-crime @ToonKoppelaars to generalize our polemic to #postgres ~4 years ago. Patience is a virtue. Yours is now rewarded. I’m writing external doc for the code kit. I’ll post it soon.
