I take feedback and complaints about FaB very seriously, and always do my best to address or at least contemplate them. But as someone who has played TCGs for 30 years, I honestly have no idea how to process or engage with “the meta is too open.” Sounds like an opportunity to me.

I sometimes forget I have to say all the things, so I’ll just drop this out there: Limited can and needs to keep getting better. We’re all working extremely hard on that, and I know a lot of folks are recognizing and appreciating the progress, but we’re far from done.

When I took a moment to highlight the under-exposed, statistically best performing team from the last major, I never thought it’d spawn a week of reaction content, an event, a store beef, and a bunch of memes. Hell of a win for our debut show!

When OUT used a six-hero structure, we had 2 adult hero reprints, 1 young hero reprint, 1 young only hero, and a total of 2 new adult heroes. Process improvements allowed us to dramatically expand the development scope for HH, but seemingly expectations grew even faster :P

I think hyperbolic content leads to exactly this. I see YT chat for every tournament centered on this kind of talk and while it is meant to be in large part ironic and silly, in online spaces ironic behavior is often eventually aped minus the irony.

It’s a core and critical part of our game, as was stated from the beginning, and it always will be. Making a Twitter post saying you disagree with that and so do your 30 friends who have played every Pro Tour isn’t quantitative proof, nor is it useful. Getting better will be.

A lot of people ask me how I got started as a game dev. My first role many years ago was as a contractor. Even though I was just a player at the time, I was given access to a set early and asked to give my feedback on it—a pretty common practice in the competitive gaming space.

FWIW, I don’t have a ton of patience for this because Magic has been going through it for approximately 25 yrs w/ the exact same arguments against Limited. There are multitudinous good reasons why Limited has persevered despite this, and it will be the same in FaB.

FWIW, I see this as very different as “the meta is too polarized.” That can be a valid complaint. It’s very hard for both of those things to be true though, because that means there are no options that sidestep polarized spreads. I definitely don’t think that’s true right now.

However, there is a judge requirement at every RTN, and if that judge can’t tell the difference between Kayo, Armed and Dangerous and Kano, Dracai of Aether in either the written word or the arena, we’ve got bigger problems with outcome reliability

Broadly speaking, I know where you are coming from and we even called out the 0/4s as among the most stifling cards in our design panel—but that doesn’t mean the game gets better right now if they are just removed from CC. It’d actually be disastrous.

Open metas are exciting to me as a competitive player because there is edge to be gained when I eventually prove the meta is not as open as people believe, and I identify the best deck. I.e. open metas are a temporary puzzle that are fun and rewarding to solve

The nature of TCGs is that you have agency over matchup spreads via deck selection/construction. Polarized matchups, requires sideboard focus—these things are essential for dynamic metagames. Too many people want a 55% deck and don’t realize games fail at that threshold

Polarized matchups derive from a deep game system that is capable of creating a wide range of play experiences. If you don’t want outlier outcomes, you need uniformity in game play. I promise FaB is richer for polarized matchups existing.

If you are a one hero player, you have already made a decision that you don’t engage with a meta—you just play your hero. At that point, you’ve made a decision to give up agency. I also suspect these solo mains are not the people doing the loud complaining.

I think presentation matters a bunch here. If someone said they personally prefer to play a narrow meta, I’d see that as a totally reasonable stance. But framing an open meta as a problem for the game that should be avoided feels very different.
