Plenty of reasons here for not weakening protection of NZ wetlands.
Wetlands are completely disregarded by some but play a critical role in our landscapes in terms of water flows, filtration, flood mitigation, not to mention species. Great thread here from @IrelandsEnviro @forum_wetlands @CCWPeatlands @LIFEonMachair

Wetlands have already been reduced to unacceptably low extent and representation in NZ. It’s hard to believe this could happen especially considering recent events. https://t.co/7SF9WrR1Mr

Wetlands reduce the impacts of flooding, absorbing heavy rain and releasing water gradually. So why did the Government recently row back protection?

This will take some unpicking to find out what it really means in practice. Ever hopeful? https://t.co/9NuliUqLJv

Wetlands, “Kidneys of the Earth”, cover only around 6% of the Earth’s land surface but are home to 40% of all plant and animal species. However, wetlands are disappearing 3️⃣ times faster than forests. We need wetlands #ForNature and for #Biodiversity. More⬇️ via @ramsarconv

Yes a focus on addressing the causes of ecological decline is needed on both sides of the ditch.
We note today's release of the national State of Environment report. Transformative change is required at scale. This is the critical decade, and we're proud of our long-term focus on addressing the causes of ecological decline, rather than its symptoms.

Great to see the predator free vision getting some international press. It’s a huge goal but for the sake of our native species we can’t afford to be any less ambitious.

A few years ago, the nation vowed to rid itself of most imported predators. But now some people are asking if that goal is feasible, or worth what it will cost.

Same result since the landmark 1997 report. Still seeing decline across most measures! Time to get serious about fixing this?
#REPORT #EnvironmentAoteaora2022 The Environment Aotearoa 2022 state of the environment report shows that we are still seeing decline across most measures of our environment, with consequences for the wellbeing of New Zealanders. https://t.co/IFpq4NI3RI
